The tortured soul is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series.
Originally appearing as the boss of the Ruined Abbey in Dragon Quest VIII, it has become a regular monster in other games in the series.
Characteristics
Tortured souls are zombified priests with jaundiced yellow skin that wear robes and a miter in various shades of purple and magenta trimmed with gold. On their right hand, they wear a ruby ring and carry a tall staff topped with a cracked skull which they use to focus their magic. It attacks by sending blasts of shadowy energy with its left hand. Their sunken eyes glow purple and they are missing a few teeth from their skulls. The former abbot is able to call forth more undead compatriots to aid it in battle, as well.
