- Nergel's name could be a reference to Nergal, the babilonic god of the underworld and lord of the dead, and is also a reference to Hades, whose role in the greek mithology is the same as Nergal.
- Nergel mitmatches in some aspects with another villains of the Dragon Quest series, such as Orgodemir (in concrete he's first form), but also to another characters created by Akira Toriyama like Magus from Chrono Trigger or Whis from Dragon Ball.
