Sterling is an important character in Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. He is the captain of the Starflight Express, the celestial train.

Appearance and personality

Sterling is a large muscular man with a disproportionately large upper body. He wears a large bronze chest guard, a white under-shirt, light blue pants and cap, yellow gloves, and black boots.

Sterling is a helpful man and considerate, inspiring the inmates in the Gortress to stand up and fight back. However, he is no pushover and will use his strength if needed.

Sterling is first meet in the Gortress, a prison fortress controlled by the Gittish Empire. He tells the Hero to get some rest as the guards will be them through a grueling day of work the next day. Sterling then serves as your tour guide the next morning, showing off the "features" of the Gortress, such as a graveyard, a gallows, and force fields that non-Gittish Empires cannot pass through lest they be shocked. To Sterling's surprise, the Hero can pass through the fields just fine thanks to the Gittish Seal in their possession. The next day, the prisoners awake to find a jailmate about to be hanged. Sterling stops the executioner and inspires the other inmates to revolt. Sterling then tags alongside the Hero to defeat Goreham-Hogg and free the Celestrians that were captive in the lower level of the Gortress. Sterling re-obtains his whistle and summons the Starlight Express. Sterling is then revealed to be the captain of the train and the person Stella was looking for.
