The steel broadsword is a standard sword with a long blade forged from steel and a yellow hilt and crossguard. It often marks the turning point from early game weapons to mid-level weapons, being an effective weapon in terms of attack power and gold cost. This sword has appeared in every main entry in the series and even multiple spinoffs, as well.

Due to text restrictions in the Game Boy Color remake of Dragon Quest, it was known as Steel with a symbol of a sword next to it in said version.
Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary LineEdit
The Steel broadsword has an Attack bonus of +30 and can only be equipped by The Hero. It can be purchased from Moonahan, Rippleport, Tantegel, and Dirkandor for 1,500 Gold Coins and sold for 1,125.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of SalvationEdit
The Steel broadsword has an Attack bonus of +33. It can be equipped by The Hero, Warriors, Martial Artists, and Sages. However, it actually decreases a Martial Artists's attack by 16. It can be purchased for 1,300 gold coins (1,500 gold in the original NES version) at several locations or one can be obtained by winning the first Treasures n' Trapdoors Track near Romaria.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the ChosenEdit
The Steel broadsword has an Attack bonus of +40. It can be equipped by The Hero, Ragnar, and Psaro. It can be bought in Ballymoral, Porthtrunnel, Mintos, Zalenagrad, and Canalot for 2,000 Gold Coins.
In Chapter 3, after opening his own shop, Torneko can obtain 60,000 Gold Coins by giving Endor soldiers a total of 6 steel broadswords and 6 pieces of iron armour.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly BrideEdit
The Steel broadsword has an Attack bonus of +33. The Hero, his son, Harry, and Tuppence can equip it. It can be bought for 2,000 Gold Coins in Coburg, Lodestar Harbour, Zoomingale, Mostroferrato, and Stockenbarrel.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of RevelationEdit
In this game, the Steel broadsword has an Attack bonus of +33 and a style bonus of +16. The Hero, Carver, Amos, Terry, and Goowain can equip it. Metal slime knights have a 1/64 chance of dropping one. They can also be bought in Alltrades Abbey, Amor, Wellshire, Ghent, and Scrimsley for 2000 Gold Coins, and can be sold for 1,500.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten PastEdit
The Steel broadsword has an Attack bonus of +33 and a style bonus of +16. It can be equipped by The Hero, Kiefer, Ruff, Sir Mervyn, and Aishe. Equipping the sword will actually decrease Ruff's attack by 16, though. Sir Mervyn joins the party with one equipped. Steel broadswords can be purchased for 2,800 gold coins at Alltrades Abbey and sold for 1,400. It can also be won as a prize from the Lucky Panel at the Casino.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed KingEdit
The Steel broadsword has an Attack bonus of +35 and can be equipped by The Hero, as well as Jessica and Red, provided they have enough skill points in Swords. It can be purchased in Ascantha and Pickham for 2,000 Gold Coins and sold for 1,000.

For the first time in the series, the steel broadsword cannot be purchased from any shop. It can be made by upgrading an iron broadsword in the Krak Pot and can be upgraded even further.

The recipe guide for the sword is the Smithing with Steel book, which is found in the Warrior's Rest Inn.
Dragon Quest Monsters: JokerEdit
Steel broadswords have an attack bonus of +30. They are described in game as "A sturdy sword forged from steel". It can be bought from the Lethal Weapons Armoury as well as the vending machine on Celeste Isle for 1,600 Gold Coins.
Dragon Quest SwordsEdit
This weapon is made by tempering the Copper Sword with 2 Monsterbone and 1 Iron Ore. After this sword is tempered into a derivate sword, it becomes available to buy normally in the weapon shop for 750 Gold Coins. This sword also teaches the hero the Multistrike Master Stroke and increases his attack by +25.
