The Den of Iniquity is the undersea lair of Mariella, one of the highest ranking members of the Children of Hargon.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]

The den of Inequity is sea cavern that is dimly lit by hanging green domes and columns of similar color, casting a eerie glow through the lair not unlike faint light at the bottom of the sea. The interior is an odd juxtaposition of beauty and brutalism, with dozens of large rose beds filling the halls and chambers while wrought brass speaking tubes and floor grates are bolted into the stone work, and lengthy sheet of brass is sunk into the floor in lieu of a carpet.

The player is first informed of the den by the Mermaid Guard Captain in Mersea, who tailed the she-demon's subordinates when they fled from the Mermaid's Sanctuary after the Scions of Erdrick stopped their raid. Mariella's lair is northwest of the Lighthouse, and requires the magic key to enter.

Upon entering the den the Scions will witness Mariella chewing out her peons over the botched raid. She demands to be left alone to seethe and retreats into her chamber, with the door being locked by an intricate magic seal that requires three keys to open. While the Prince of Cannock urges caution owing to their walking into a lion's den of monsters, his little sister haughtily chuckles and suggest they play on the dissent that fills the ranks of the Children of Hargon to sow chaos and maneuver more easily. She proposes that they use the speaking tubes filling the den and pretend that Belial, the chief subordinate to Hargon, is furious with Mariella for disobeying his order and is waging an assault on the lair with his own forces.

After dispatching the shining armour standing by the nearest speaking tube and claiming the symbol of spite key, the Prince of Cannock plays the role of the hulking demon while his sister the victim and the Princess of Moonbrooke's spells cover the sound effects. The entire den is sent into bedlam, with most monsters cursing their mistress' disobedience for bringing Belial's fury upon them. Mariella herself falls for the ruse, ordering her minions to make a last stand to buy her time to escape. The Scions confront Mariella as she inhales her collection of art into the birdcage that makes up her lower body and ridicule her for her cowardice and horrid treatment of her subordinates. The resulting battle concludes with the wench yielding to the Scions, who offer to spare her life in exchange for soul sigil; the witch tosses the sigil to the distance and chastises their innocence while she makes a break for it.
