The King squid is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest III. It is a large aggressive squid that terrorises seafaring adventurers.
Characteristics[edit]
King squids are enormous squids with light blue bodies and darker blue tinges on its head, mantle, and the suckers on its many tentacles. In the Super Famicom version of III, the squids' bodies are more purple with a darker shade of blue on their heads and mantles. This color scheme is used in its first two appearances in the Monsters series, as well as the 2D version of XI.
They are among the most dangerous monsters that can be encountered on the high seas, particularly if multiple are encountered in the same battle. The squids possess high attack power and often have the ability to attack twice per turn. Instant death spells often work as an effective strategy to counteract their high HP pools. In VIII, Squid kids began appearing as their infant forms.
In XI, King squids have grown to truly colossal proportions to match those of its fellow squid Khalamari and are aided by their left and right tentacles in battle. Its tentacles attack on their own and can shield its main body from harm.

After the appearance of the Black Citadel, a King squid can be encountered in the middle of Baccarat, terrorizing a group of mercenaries in the service of Cash and Carrie. The party can choose to defeat it and earn their gratitude.
It poses no significant threat and its main difference from an ordinary King squid is its large HP pool. After it is defeated, the mercenaries offer to pay off the party with 200 tokens for the casino in exchange for not informing Cash and Carrie about the incident. If the Hero refuses their offer once, they will increase the reward to 400 tokens.

Dragon Quest X[edit]
King squids began appearing in Version 3.4 of the game. They are able to perform a barrage attack with their tentacles and spit out ink to envelop characters in illusions. Unlike other games, the King squids are no longer vulnerable to Whack spells.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]
In the 3D mode of the game, King squids are aided by their left and right tentacles, which will act independently either attacking one character at a time, lashing out and damaging the entire party, or shielding the squid from damage. The battle will end if the main body is defeated before its tentacles. In the 2D modes of the 3DS version and the Definitive Edition of the game, King squids will be aided by a pair of Squid kids instead.
