(For the Dragon Quest VII scenario of the same name, see DLC Tablet.)

Scary Lair is a dungeon in Dragon Quest V.

It became the home of Saber after he was left to run feral by Bishop Ladja. It is here that the Hero encounters the sabrecat again after being seperated for so many years.

Story[edit]

While in the small, rural farming town of Hay, the Hero learns that the residents are having a problem with a strange beast who is destroying their crops, and that the village chief is willing to offer a nice sum of gold to anyone who can take care of the problem. The Hero goes to investigate and solve the problem by visiting the nearby cave "Scary Lair" to find out what and why this strange beast is destroying their harvest.

When the Hero arrives at the end of the cave, he encounters a creature who looks like an older version of Saber, the young sabercat he and Bianca took on as a pet during his childhood, but which the Hero was separated from for many years due to the tragic events that occurred in the Ancient Ruins. After trying and failing to get the wild beast to calm itself and quit its mindless assault, the Hero remembers Bianca's Ribbon which she gave to Saber so that the three of them would always remember the occasion when they first met.

The Hero proceeds to show Bianca's ribbon to the ferocious beast, at which point Saber remembers the Hero, comes back to its senses and rejoins the party by running to and embracing the Hero in a moving scene. On reuniting with Saber, the Hero also recovers his father's sword, which the feral Saber had apparently retrieved at some point during their long seperation from each other.

While it was a happy reunion for the Hero and his pet, the close minded residents of Hay were very unhappy to see the Hero return with the savage beast that had ravaged their crops in toe, and presumed the Hero had simply set up a scam to steal gold from them. Despite the village chief's visible displeasure, he nevertheless pays the gold promised, but he (and the other villagers) request that he never return.
