Etymology
Zugzwang (German for "compulsion to move") is a term used in chess to refer to a scenario where a player is put at a disadvantage because they are forced to make a move. It is said that a player is "in zugzwang" when all possible actions will severely weaken their position as opposed to taking no action at all.
