Kacrack is a spell in the Dragon Quest series. It pierces all enemies with ice damage. Kacrack was removed from the series' spell pool in Dragon Quest V, due to Kacrackle's target range being increased to effect all enemies. The spell would not return until Dragon Quest IX.

Localization history

The Japanese spell Hyadain exists only in the third and fourth games. In the Japanese version of the games, Hyadain's position as the second strongest ice spell would eventually be taken by Mahyado and a stronger spell named Mahyadedosu was introduced in the Monsters: Joker series of games and eventually introduced in the main series starting with Dragon Quest IX. In the English versions of the games, Kacrackle continued to be used as the name of the strongest ice spell even though a new spell had been introduced, while Kacrack would be used as the new English name for Mahyado.

Appearances

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

Learned by Mages & Sages at Level 32 in the original release due to a glitch. It costs 9 MP and hits all enemies for 60~80 points of damage. In the Super Famicom remake and its Game Boy Color port the glitch has been corrected and the spell is learned at Level 26.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

Kacrack is learned by Borya at Level 27 and deals 60~80 damage for 8 MP.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

Learned by Mages at level 40. Lacerates all enemies with a raw volley of rasping ice for 24 MP. Base damage is 80~104 until the caster's magical might overcomes 200, and the cap is 204~227 at 999.

Dragon Quest X

Kacrack is learned by Mages at level 51 and Death Masters at level 77. It can also be learned by Jailcat as a monster companion with the Crack Knowledge skill tree for 32 skill points. It costs 21 MP to cast, with the base damage damage 76~88. Higher damage is calculated as (Magical might - 169) x 0.36 + 76~88 for a maximum range of 376~388. The caster's magical might can be pushed beyond 999 thanks to buff abilities, changing the calculation to (Magical might - 999) /4 + 376~388 for a true cap of 501~513 at 1,500 magical might.

As X is a 3D game the ability for Kacrack to harm multiple monsters depends on the proximity of those enemies to the target monster the caster selects when casting the spell. The range for the target is 15 meters, with the spread damage effect extending to 6 meters.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Rab and Veronica will learn Kacrack at level 44. The spell costs 20 MP to cast and it's base range is 104~136 with the maximum range being 200~232 once the caster's Magical might reaches 323.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Kacrack rips into all enemies with a hail of razor-sharp icicles for 12 MP. It can be learned from various skill trees.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2

Kacrack deals 114~126 base damage, and will cap at 209~231. It costs 28 MP to cast, and can be learned from all the skills it could be previously. It can now be learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below

Kacrack is the third tier spell of Jessica and can be learned by investing 16 skill points. After charging her Crackle spell for a short time, she can cast Kacrack, which creates a large burst of ice crystals in front of her that have a chance of freezing enemies for 19 MP.

Dragon Quest Tact

Kacrack can be learned by Claria at level 48 and can also be learned by Slimecicle through Talent Blossoming. It costs 108 MP to cast. It has a range of three squares in front of her and inflicts major Crack-type spell damage to all enemies in a range of three squares horizontally. Upgrading the spell increases its damage and reduces the amount of MP it costs to cast.

Japanese musician

Japanese musician Kenichi Maeyamada (前山田健一) has used the pseudonym "ヒャダイン"(the Japanese name for kacrack), in addition to his real name. He chose that name because he found the uselessness of kacrack (in Dragon Quest III and IV) ironic and fun.[2]
