Chalky (テオ, Teo) is a character in Dragon Quest XI.

He is the adoptive grandfather of the Luminary.

Appearance and Personality[edit]

Chalky is a portly older man with a kind face. He is bald, but has very bushy eyebrows and a bushy mustache. He wears a long-sleeved white shirt, typically with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and a long green tunic with vertical yellow stripes on it, black trousers, and brown sandals. Chalky covers his head with an orange knit cap, wears a short orange shawl over his shoulders, and a long orange sash tied around his waist. He is rarely seen without his fishing pole.

Although the Luminary is not his blood relation, it is clear that Chalky cares deeply for the boy and dotes on him.

Story[edit]

Chalky holding the baby Luminary.

In the game's prologue, Chalky is out fishing at a stream when he hears the cries of a baby. He is shocked to find the infant Luminary in a basket safe after a recent storm. Chalky picks up the baby boy and reassures him that there's no reason to be frightened anymore. He takes the child back to the village of Cobblestone, where he is raised as the son of his daughter Amber.

At the time of the Luminary's 16th birthday, Chalky has already passed away. When it comes time for the young man to start his journey after completing his coming-of-age ceremony at the top of Cobblestone Tor, Amber gives Chalky's former traveling clothes to the Luminary.

When the Luminary later returns to Cobblestone, an Yggdrasil root transports him ten years into the past. In this past version of the village, he finds Chalky, who is the only villager to recognize who he must be. After hearing his grandson's tale of what has been happening, Chalky tells the Luminary to dig in front of the three-sided rock at Cobblestone Falls when he returns to the present time. He gives his grandson some final words of wisdom: "Don't waste your time bearing grudges--live life with love in your heart." Some of the Luminary's party members mull over this advice in later Party Talk.

Upon returning to the present, the Luminary and his companion, Erik, follow Chalky's instructions at Cobblestone Falls and find a box containing two letters. One of these letters is from the Luminary's birth mother, Queen Eleanor, while the other is from Chalky himself. In this second letter, Chalky advises the Luminary to use a magical stone called the Keystone (which is also in the box) to open the Door of Departure and travel through the world to learn of his destiny. When the Luminary and Erik use the Keystone, the Door of Departure transports them to the Hotto Steppe, where they meet the sister spellcasters Veronica and Serena. This concludes Chalky's role in the main plot.

Additionally, if the Luminary marries Gemma or chooses any party member as a life partner in the endgame, Chalky (with a halo over his head) appears in the commemorative picture.
