Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon

Swords are a recurring type of weapon, appearing in every installment of the Dragon Quest franchise. This weapon is favored by Heroes, Warriors, Gladiators, Armamentalists, etc., and is favored by many enemies such as the legendary Estark. Swords are also favored for their effectivness against members of the Dragon family, with all swords after the ninth game dealing 10% more damage and specialty blades such as the Dragonsbane dealing even more.

Since swords are often associated with legendary heroes, there are many notable swords in the series such as Erdrick's sword, Zenithian Sword, Falcon blade, and the Hypernova sword.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest[edit]

The Hero can equip some swords found in Alefgard; the strongest weapon is the ancestral blade.

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]

Both The Prince of Midenhall and the Prince of Cannock can equip swords, though the former has a larger selection to choose from.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

The Hero, Warriors, and Merchants can use various swords. Priests and Sages can use some swords as well, but not as many as other classes.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

The Hero, Ragnar McRyan, Torneko Taloon, Kiryl, Meena Mahabala, and Psaro can use various swords. However Kiryl and Meena are much more restricted in their options.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]

The Hero, his son, Debora Briscoletti, Sancho, Tuppence, and numerous monster companions such as Slime Knights can use various swords. Compared to previous games though, the selection is spread out, and some blades can only be used by certain monster companions.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

The Hero, Carver, Amos, Terry, and various monsters can use swords.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

The Hero, Kiefer, and Aishe can use various swords. Sir Mervyn can use swords as well, but is more restricted.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

Both The Hero and Angelo can wield swords. While there is some overlap, there are differences in their skill sets and some swords are restricted to either the Hero or Angelo. The hero (and later Jessica and Red) mostly use broadswords and longswords, while Angelo uses rapiers.

Once Jessica Albert raises her knife skill to 30 points, she can start equipping swords as well. Red is able to do the same once she invests 59 skill points into her Knife skill.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

Swords can be used by the Warrior, Thief, Minstrel, Gladiator, and Armamentalist vocations. However, once a character fully masters the Sword skill, they can freely use swords with any vocation.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

The Hero, Erik, Sylvando, and Hendrik can equip swords. Swords are by far the most plentiful weapon class and deal extra damage to dragons. They are not as strong as their two-handed brethren, but the user can be dual-wield them for extra damage.

Dragon Quest Builders[edit]

Dragon Quest Builders 2[edit]

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below[edit]

Luceus, Aurora, and Terry use swords as their main weapons. The former two share a mostly identical list, but the wanderer in blue has a selection all too himself Aurora & Luceus:

Terry's swords:

Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End[edit]

Lazarel and Teresa can equip swords as their default weapons, and Terry returns as a part of the game's story mode.
