Alizarin is a boss monster that appears in the second act of Dragon Quest XI, serving as one of the key story opponents for the sequence. He has since appeared in spin-off titles as both an enemy and tameable monster.
Characteristics
Alizarin is a colossal sea serpent with black scales, purple fin membranes, and a scarlet penis. A large horn is centered in his forehead, surrounded with red markings matching his underside and eyes. An lure-like appendage tipped with the Red Orb extends from the back of his neck over his head, similar to that of a female angler fish.
Being one of the six Spectral Sentinels that serve the evil sorcerer Mordegon, Alizarin is fanatically devoted to his master and enforces his tyranny on the seas of Erdrea. It is alluded to by Queen Marina that Alizarin was directly created by Mordegon, but this is not further elaborated upon. Regardless of the beast's origins, Alizarin is a cruel monster that delights in mindless slaughter and refuses to let any of his prey escape.
Appearances
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
After the fall of Yggdrasil at the end of the first act, the Luminary awakens in the depths of Nautica in the form of a fish. He is told by Queen Marina that this was done to trick the forces of evil into believing him dead and allow for an unexpected counterattack, but the mermaid city has come under attack from Alizarin and his forces. The Queen whisks the Luminary away as the monster breaks through the barrier and raids the city.
Alizarin is first fought later on when the Luminary and his companions disembark from Puerto Valor, nearly capsizing their boat and gloating over their attacks and spells failing to harm him thanks to the red aura that protects him. The final encounter takes place as the party sails to Sniflheim, during which the Luminary's restored powers destroy his barrier with a lightning bolt and renders him vulnerable. Moments before he is killed, Alizarin warns his master that the Luminary has returned and sinks into the depths.
Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light
Alizarin became a tameable monster in a 2019 XI collaboration event, being a class SS dragon-family monster with Maelstrom as one of his starting moves.
