Incantation (Also known as Scepter Ball) is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series that has been used by many bosses and Demon Lords throughout the series. It telekinetically sends out energy balls or orbs to violently smash into characters.

The attack can either randomly target a pair of characters or deal damage twice to a single character. It often deals a fixed amount of damage that cannot be reduced, even with defence.

Appearances

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

The skill makes its first appearance as an attack used by Mortamor in his first form. He will send out both of his orbs either to strike a single character twice or two random party members. The damage inflicted is calculated as the user's Normal attack damage ÷ 2 + 67. When used, the in-game text states that Mortamor "launches two balls of energy sailing towards the party!".

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

The skill can be used by Cardinal Sin, Baron von Bellycose, and Orgodemir in his humanoid form at the Malign Shrine and second form at the Cathedral of Blight. Once again, the damage is calculated as the user's Normal attack damage ÷ 2 + 67.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

The skill is used by Rhapthorne in his second form in either stage of the battle. The damage is calculated as his Normal attack damage ÷ 2 + 67. When used, the in-game text states that Rhapthorne "flings the ball from the top of his staff!".

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

It appears as an enemy-only skill used by King Godwyn's first form, King Godfrey, and Rhapthorne, naturally. However, the damage calculation has been reduced to Normal attack damage ÷ 2 + 37.

Dragon Quest X

Incantation can be used by Maldragora in his Worldbreaker form. In this game, it lands six attacks centered around a single target and any nearby characters. The attack inflicts around 100~140 dark-element damage per hit and has a chance to place a curse. If a character receives all six hits at once, it is very likely that they will be instantly KO'd. If Maldragora is under the effects of his Shroud of Shadows, the attack's damage is significantly increased.

Dragon Quest Tact

Incantation is known naturally by Maldragora the Worldbreaker at level 1 and can be learned by Hyperanemon at level 26, costing 38 MP to cast. It has a range of three squares away from the caster in any direction, inflicts minor typeless spell damage to a single target six times, and has a chance to curse them, as well.
