Kaclang is a spell which renders the recipient invulnerable, but also unable to act. It was introduced in Dragon Quest III at first exclusive to the hero class. Affects the whole party. Some monsters also have the Kaclang spell.

Seemingly useless at first glance, the spell is actually quite handy to trick an enemy into wasting all their MP, as well as scouting for their abilities.

Appearances

Dragon Quest III

Kaclang is learned by the Hero at level 12. It has the highest action priority in the game, being cast before all other actions.

Dragon Quest IV

Kaclang is learned by the Hero at level 21.

Peepers can use it on themselves.

Dragon Quest V

Kaclang is only used by the enemies Wyrtoise and Hippopotamiss.

Dragon Quest VI

In Dragon Quest VI DS, Kaclang is learned by the recruitable Liquid Metal Slime Mercury at level 3, when a Luminary reaches Learner (rank 2), when a Hero becomes a Village Hero (rank 1) and upon reaching Rank 2 of the Liquid metal slime vocation.

It can be used by Arrghgoyles.

Dragon Quest VII

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

The Hero will learn Kaclang after purchasing the spell for 12 points in his Luminary skill tree. The spell costs 8 MP to cast but now only targets a single ally, with the effect lasting for 2~4 turns.

Dragon Quest Monsters

Called Ironize in this game, it requires the monster to reach level 15 with 62 MP and 58 intelligence. It is naturally learned by the DarkCrab, EvilBeast, EyeBall, MetalKing, Tortragon and WhipBird.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2

Ironize now requires 87 intelligence to learn. It is naturally learned by the WonderEgg. It is no longer naturally learned by the EyeBall

Dragon Quest Tact

Kaclang can be learned by Hero Erdrick through his Character Builder and costs 107 MP to cast. It has a range of up to two squares away from him and can also be self-cast. It fully protects the target from any damage they may receive until the start of their next turn. Although it can only be cast one time per battle. Upgrading the spell reduces the amount of MP it costs to cast.
