Game | Dragon Quest V |
Zoomingale is a town in Dragon Quest V. A twisting maze of walls makes navigation through this wind-powered location tricky.
The most noteworthy aspect of this town, aside from its labyrinth-like structure, is that this is where the Hero learns the Zoom spell used for quick traveling to and from previously visited locations. This is also where the name of this town derives from in both English and Japanese (The Japanese name of the town is "Rurafen", with "Rūra" being the name of the Zoom spell in Japanese).
This form of acquiring Zoom is unique in the Dragon Quest series, as in all other Dragon Quest games, the Heros learn the Zoom spell the same way most other spells in the series are acquired (i.e. by levelling up and reaching a certain level).
In contrast, the Hero of Dragon Quest V does not learn the Zoom spell by reaching a certain level, but instead learns it by fulfilling an errand for a certain villager in this town.
Story
When the hero arrives at this town, he hears talk of an old man who resides in this town that goes by the name of "Toilen Trubble" (ベネット benetto "Benett" in Japanese), whom he soon meets. Toilen Trubble is a researcher of spells, and infamous amongst his fellow town residents for the loud explosions that erupt from his home at both day and night during his unwavering yet unsuccessful attempts to create magic.
He sends the Hero out to look for the Lunar Zoombloom, which can be found in a section of the world map west of Zoomingale, but which can only be seen at night. Toilen shows the Hero a map with the location of this plant marked down, but the Hero has to commit the displayed location to memory himself, since it is not marked on the Hero's personal map, but on one of Toilen's own private maps. When the Hero retrieves it for him, the Hero learns the Zoom spell, which proves to be invaluable in his quest.
Much later in the game, the Hero can also learn the Hocus Pocus spell from the now bed-ridden Toilen Trubble in this town, though unlike learning the Zoom spell, this is entirely optional and not required to continue with the game.
