The Mountaintop Tunnel (formerly Mount Probina) is a dungeon located behind Providence in Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past.
It connects the village of Providence to the church at the top of the summit.
Story[edit]
The party makes their way through the cave after finding out that the village elder Abraham and his son Caleb are at the church on the mountaintop. There, the party witnesses an argument between father and son about what the Rucker Empire wants from them: their beloved statue of the Goddess. Abraham seeks an audience with the Emperor for a peaceful negotation, but Caleb believes that the warlike people will stop at nothing. They receive word that the Rucker forces on are on the march and Caleb rushes out, taking the statue with him. The party follows him back to the bridge near Providence, where Caleb has confronted the Rucker forces with the Goddess statue in hand. Caleb breaks the statue in two, hoping to end the problems between Providence and Rucker. The captain gloats at Caleb, telling him that the statue's destruction is what they sought all along, since the statue's holy power was what kept them at bay. Captain Skraw then reveals himself and his troops as monsters. Now that the statue is shattered, they are free to raze the village to the ground. The party rushes back to the town and sees that the monsters and the villagers are already locked in combat. They make their way back through the tunnel, encountering Abraham on the way to the church.
Back on the mountaintop church, Caleb explains their predicament to the priest, who suddenly remembers that the town he was once from was attacked by monsters as well. He threw himself into the sea, washing up on the shores of Providence with no memories of his past. The priest locks Caleb and the party in the church's cellar, believing that the monsters are after him, so he faces them alone. The next morning, the party and Caleb are able to escape the cellar, but find that the church has been destroyed. On their way back down to the village, they see that the people have had their souls stolen. Caleb finds the soulless body of his father Abraham and despairs. He drops a small chest that he found in the cellar behind him. Inside is a scroll, showing a goddess healing herself in a spring. Caleb suddenly recollects that the priest once purified the Goddess statue in the same way in the spring at the mountaintop behind the church. The party gets the idea to collect the pieces from the bridge and restore them in the spring, as well. They make it back to the spring, but are stopped by Skraw, who realizes their plan and attacks them. Skraw puts up a difficult fight, but then Caleb gets the idea to throw the two halves of the statue in the spring, sapping the monster of its strength and allowing the party to defeat him. Skraw has the last laugh, and using his remaining power to completely destroy the Goddess statue. But all hope is not lost, as the souls of the villagers return to their bodies with Skraw's defeat.
