Peep is a spell in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest III, Peep was then learned by Wizards but has since extended to a less narrow range.

Function

Peep is a field spell that was introduced alongside the monster that gave worth to the spell: Mimic. Casting Peep will determine whether or not a treasure chest is safe and, in later installments/reprises, can be used to appraise items. The aura on any chest or container gauges what kind of contents it has:

  • Blue aura - contains an item
  • Yellow aura - contains gold
  • Red aura - it's a trap

Appearances

Dragon Quest III

Originally translated as X-ray, the spell is learned by Mages & Sages at Level 18. The chests in the Pyramid containing Mummy men will glow yellow if the spell is used on them.

Dragon Quest IV

Known as X-Ray in the NES version, it is learned by Borya at Level 15 in the DS version.

Dragon Quest V

Only the hero and his son can learn Peep. In Dragon Quest V, once learned at level 12, the spell also enables the hero to appraise items and equipment.

Dragon Quest VI

The hero learns Peep at level 12. Other characters can obtain the spell at the first rank of the Merchant vocation.

As in Dragon Quest V, Peep enables item appraisal. It is also required to open the front door to the Spiegelspire.

Dragon Quest VII

Dragon Quest VIII
