Pilchard Bay is a village found in Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past on the island of Estard. It is the hometown of The Hero and Maribel Mayde.

Story[edit]

Pilchard Bay is an idyllic fishing village located on the southern side of Estard Island. Two of the local delicacies are pilchard crackers and pilchard pie, which are fishy treats. Every year, the most exciting event is the annual pilchard harvest, where the fishermen of the village leave on a fishing expedition. When the Hero wakes up, his mother sends him off to deliver a pilchard sandwich to his father, who never leaves on a trip without one. The Hero delivers the sandwich, and Pollock asks him to help clear the ship's hold, since he's not quite old enough yet to participate in the harvest. Maribel hopes to join in on the expedition by stowing away in the ship's hold, but she is found by the Hero. She pleads with the ship's cook to let her come on the trip, but he scolds her and sends her back home. Maribel gives the Hero a piece of her mind before angrily storming off. As the Hero steps off the ship and watches it leave the harbor, a soldier from Estard Castle arrives and delivers a summons from King Donald, who wishes to speak to the Hero about the prince.

Eventually, Pollock, Mayor Mayde, and the other men of the village return from the pilchard harvest with a large bounty of fish, along with something strange that they caught in their nets: a mysterious tablet fragment, just like the ones in the Shrine of Mysteries. The Hero receives the tablet fragment from his father, and sets off in the middle of the night to meet with Prince Kiefer at the Shrine in order to place the remaining fragment on the pedestal. Unbeknownst to him, Maribel followed him from the village, and insists on accompanying the two into the shrine.

Etymology[edit]

A pilchard is a type of nutrient-rich fish that is commonly consumed by humans, a name which is fitting for a fishing village. Pilchards are also known as sardines.
