Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

Once Meena and Maya Mahabala are joined by Oojam, they're able to enter the castle, as Oojam is able to open the doors without a key. With the use of the Powder keg found in Mamon Mine, they find and defeat Balzack in Chapter 4. Marquis de Léon, however, ruins the trio's attempt at revenge and engages them in an unwinnable battle. The party is imprisoned after being defeated, and they are able to escape via a tunnel in the dungeon. Guards spot the group and Oojam stays behind to allow the sisters to escape. If the player immediately returns upon exiting the castle, Oojam's corpse will be lying in the courtyard: in reality, Oojam was only near-death and managed to later escape to Vrenor thanks to a girl also escaping from the castle.

Later, Ragnar McRyan and his ally Healie arrive on word of the evil going on in the castle with Ragnar marching directly to the marguis' lair while hapless guards attempt to restrain him. Upon the Chosen Ones arrival to the castle, Healie informed The Hero and their allies about what happened and tells them about needing the Magic Key to enter the castle after Oojam picked the previous locks. When entering the castle, the party witnesses Ragnar trouncing the guards at his sides and forces his way into the hidden chamber after briefly speaking to the group. Ragnar keeps the castle guards at bay while the Chosen Ones battle Marquis de Léon.

Remake changes[edit]

  • Unlike the NES version, where the gold is lost for being defeated by Marquis de Léon in Chapter 4, the remake allows the player to keep it.
  • The old man in the jail was originally just a prisoner. The remakes establish him to be the original Marquis of Palais de Léon.
  • Rather than dying, like in the NES version, Marquis de Léon reverts to human form and loses any memory he had of his evil actions.
