Foo Yung & Chow Mein
Dragon Quest IV
Left: Foo Yung; Right: Chow Mein
Japanese name エッグラ and チキーラ
Romaji eggura, chikīra
Race Presumably Human
Age Unknown

Chow Mein and Foo Yung are a pair of super bosses exclusive to the remake of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, who dwell in Nadiria at the end of the fungeon. A marked contrast to other super bosses in the series, the pair are amicable fellows who merely want a friendly spar with the party.

Providing together one of the game's extra challenges, defeating the pair for the first time will advance the post game story considerably and set in motion a greater conspiracy involving the schism of Diabolic Hall being unmasked. Subsequent victories will grant the player pieces of the mythical (and terrifying) Pandemonic Equipment, a brand new set exclusive to Psaro (Character).

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

The two bosses are introduced with them being in a heated argument that talks about an old dilemma: "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" Chow Mein believes that the chicken came first while Foo Yung believes it was the egg. When they noticed the party, the two of them asks if the party can fight them in order to lose some of their anger from their argument. Should the party succeed, they would use their power to affect the giant, floating painting behind them depicting Yggdrasil that will cause the blooming of the rare Yggdrasil flower atop the Tree.

The duo would usually return to their argument once again by the time the party revisits them again, providing another opportunity for a fight with the party. The painting behind the duo now depicts a figure who wields the Pandemonic Equipment, who would lose its equipment as the party defeats the duo since the two of them who would then use their power to get pieces of equipment from the figure. The order the Pandemonic equipment is gained are its shield, sword, armour, and helmet, with a Yggdrasil leaf and a Boxer shorts between the latter two items. This would cause the figure to become naked by the time the helmet is received.

Should the party defeat the duo after all of the items are gained from the figure, the duo, now feeling much more calmer after the numerous battles that were fought before, notices that there is nothing left for them to give from the painting of the figure. The painting suddenly glows and the naked figure comes out of it, stating that his name is "Old Man Psaro" and can then be invited to Pioneer Town (though his name by then will then be changed to "Psaro, Queen of the Desert," but the name itself is only known through the text box whenever a named character speaks).

Afterwards, the party can revisit the duo again, where they are now much more friendlier to each other than before, though they will still allow the party to challenge them to see how much turns the party can defeat them as quickly as possible, with the quickest turn count being saved and remembered by them.

Chow Mein[edit]

A rooster-themed martial artist of absurd strength, he takes his name from a Chinese chicken dish. Able to make use of skills from Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, he alone would easily be a considerable challenge for any player. Although hard to hit with ice and wind, he has no resistance to flames and explosions, and he can be dazzled or sapped if the caster is persistent. Keep in mind that there is no way to reduce the damage of Boulder Toss aside from defending.

Foo Yung[edit]

A portly performer with a mercurial temperament also named after Chinese food, this egg-shaped fellow will rake over the coals and chill to the bone with his breath weapons, never mind the headaches his dance will cause. He is immune to Frizz, partially resistant to ice and flame breath, and totally immune to all status ailments save Fizzle and Sap.
