The Monster Wrangler (まもの使い, Mamono Tsukai) is a powerhouse vocation that relies brute strength in battle and makes up for its shortcomings by making allies of monsters defeated in battle.
Localization history[edit]
The name Monster Wrangler is the current English translation of the Japanese Mamono Tsukai, replacing the older Monster Master nomenclature that was first used in 2011 for the Nintendo DS remake of Dragon Quest VI. The Monster Wrangler name was first alluded to in 2019 through the wrangler's ring item in Dragon Quest Builders 2 that allowed players to recruit monsters as residents for their villages, and was fully established during the June 22, 2023 trailer reveal for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. The appearance of the Hero of the fifth mainline game in Dragon Quest Tact with the title of "Legendary Monster Wrangler" followed that same year, and the term was cemented in 2024 with the release of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit]
The Monster Wrangler was added to the third remake of the third game in the series in 2024, utilizing the design seen in X. Their abilities are based on those of monsters and they can supplement these by rescuing friendly beasts found throughout the world.
The vocation has the inglorious distinction of being the one male design that was censored to satisfy the strictness of the CERO ratings board, with the men now wearing black shirts instead of going bare chested.

Dragon Quest Monsters series[edit]
All characters who train monsters are referred to as Monster Wranglers, with the adolescent Psaro being forced to take up the vocation due to the curse placed upon him by his father Randolfo.
Dragon Quest Tact[edit]
The female Monster Wrangler from Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake appears as an S-rank member of the Hero family as part of the Japan-only limited Extreme Dragon Quest III event appearing on her own banner. She can also participate in Garboyle's Battle Road as a party member.
The Hero of Dragon Quest V was given the title of "Legendary Monster Wrangler" for his appearance as a unit in Tact during the game's third anniversary event.
