Dora-in-Grey (メルトア, Meltoa) is a boss and villain in Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. She is an evil spirit created by Mordegon that resides in the town of Phnom Nonh and is capable of trapping unsuspecting victims in an alternate dimension in order to make herself more beautiful.
Appearance and Personality
When she first appears, Dora-in-Grey disguises herself as a red-haired little girl named Dora who tricks people in Phnom Nonh into visiting her cursed mural with promises of riches. In her true form, she has the appearance of a beautiful ball-jointed doll with porcelain skin, evil red eyes, long flowing green hair, and wears a purple gown with magenta frills and gold lining. Around her neck, Dora-in-Grey wears a necklace with the Magic Key, which she utilizes to enthrall her enemies and seal away their abilities. She also wears a golden tiara decorated with blue jewels. On the lower half of her body, she has a large green birdcage with thorns in the place of legs. Most of her lower body cannot be seen due to her immense size.

Etymology
In the English version of the game, Dora-in-Grey's name is a reference to the 1890 novel The Portrait of Dorian Grey written by Irish playwright and poet Oscar Wilde. The story centers around an amoral young man named Dorian Grey who sells his soul in order to remain young and beautiful, while a portrait of him painted by a friend grows old instead.
Dora-in-Grey's French name, Chiaravaggia, is a reference to the late 16th century Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known mononymously as Caravaggio. He was a controversial artist known for his intense and realistic paintings, as well as for his dramatic usage of lighting which went on to influence Baroque painting.
