"I see your mouth is as vulgar as your face! Yes, I'M the King! And who exactly do you think YOU are!?"

Trode is a major character and the eponymous "Cursed King" from Square Enix's Dragon Quest VIII.

He is the king of Trodain, and Medea's father. Both he and his daughter were cursed by Dhoulmagus after he stole the Sceptre from Castle Trodain's sealed chamber. Although he is not a combatant, the player can control him at certain parts of the game.

Appearance and personality[edit]

Trode is a good monarch, consumed with the well-being of his kingdom and especially of his daughter, but shows little concern for anything else. After being cursed with a hideous, toad-like from, Trode travels via a wagon hitched to his now turned horse daughter (a fact that he often is upset by). After the defeat of Dhoulmagus, Trode is almost heartbroken by the fact that his and Medea's curse still lingers. However, once the demon Rhapthorne is finally defeated, the two are restored to normal. In the epilogue, King Trode decides to disrupt the arranged marriage of his daughter to Prince Charmles of Argonia, and is hinted to be quite pleased with the romantic nature between Medea and the Hero. In the special ending, he can become the Hero's father-in-law after the revelation of the Hero being revealed to be of noble birth.

Contrary to his physical appearance, Trode is shown to be quite stealthy and he can even hold his own in combat, being able to fend off an armed guard in the ending with nothing more than a stick. He and Yangus have a recurring routine in which Trode will often appear out of nowhere during a scene, scaring the ex-thief witless. Trode is something of a pervert as well, commenting frequently on the physical appearance of Jessica, particularly when she changes her outfit.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

Throughout the story, Trode offers wisdom and insight for the party as they travel the world, on the Battle Records menu. He also refurbishes an Alchemy Pot he managed to recover from Castle Trodain, as it is an important and invaluable item for crafting new items and weapons.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

Trode appears at the Quester's Rest as a special guest, and will give the Hero various equipment when certain inn requirements are met. His physical appearance is identical to that of his cursed self from Dragon Quest VIII.
