The Highendreigh Tower (formerly the Mountain Tower) is a tower located north of Wetlock in Dragon Quest VII. The party is first taken there during the Flood.

Story

In the past, the Highendreigh Tower was separated from the rest of the continent by a river, nestled in the mountains. Due to its height, Old Man Riffer begins sending the people of Hardlypool, Spilton-on-Sea, and Wetlock there by creating a teleportal, lured in the middle of the night by the sound of his mysterious torban music. After witnessing the people of Hardlypool and Spilton-on-Sea disappear in the middle of the night, the party is able to follow the musician through one of his portals to the tower. There, they find the people of the three villages confused as to why they have ended up in the tower.

At the top of the tower, the party and a group of angry villagers confront Old Man Riffer, who explains that he had no choice but to lure the people there in order to save them from the Flood. Just then, the people take notice of how high the waters have risen. Old Man Riffer knew that if he tried to explain their dire situation to them, nobody would listen. Just then, the Great Sea Demon Gracos summoned a mighty rainstorm, raising the sea level and submerging the entire continent in water. He stored the tower with supplies and a raft, intending to stop the Flood at its source by defeating Gracos. Just as the party leaves, he stops them and explains that he is one of the Roamers, but he left the tribe due to a disagreement. Now, Riffer travels to various lands using his powers to help others in need. However, he has grown too old to fight Gracos himself, so he asks for the party's help to do so, lending them a boat in order to reach the Sunken Citadel.

After defeating Gracos, the party and Old Man Riffer return to the tower, and they are hailed as the saviors of their continent.

Present

In the present, it is now possible to reach the tower via a bridge that was built to cross the river. The party once again returns to the tower at the request of Professor Wade, who offers the party a Red Fragment he and his assistant found in the Wetlock's canals. Wade needs help proving the connection between the Highendreigh Tower and the Great Flood that happened long ago, but he needs the party's help to fight off any monsters there.

Down in the tower's basement, the party fights a King slime, who splits into four smaller slimes after defeating it. The slimes explain that the tower used to be a peaceful home for monsters until one day, a Galumph took over. They offer to help the party reach the top of the tower so they can defeat the Galumph. One of the slimes, named Goobris, joins the party. Although he does not participate in battle, he can squeeze through tight spaces to unlock doors and uses his knowledge of the tower to help the party avoid any traps.

After defeating the Galumph, the party returns to Wetlock and reports to Professor Wade. He and his assistant Brook make their way to the tower, where they encounter the king slime once again. It splits up into the four slimes, informing Wade and Brook that they're friends of the party. The professor allows the party to return to Wetlock to take their reward upon finding the remains of the villagers' provisions from the Great Flood on the third floor.

Etymology

When said phonetically, the Highendreigh Tower's name sounds like the phrase "high and dry", referring to its usage to keep safe during the Great Flood.
