Sap is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series.
Introduced in Dragon Quest III, it has a 100% chance to lower an enemy's Defence if the target has no resistance.
Early on, this spell is useful on durable enemies, including bosses. However, as the game progresses, some monsters gain resistance to this spell and total immunity becomes common.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation
The Priest and Sage both learn Sap at level 8 and Kasap at level 18. The Orochi sword when used as an item in battle emulates the effect of Sap.

Borya and Maya Mahabala both learn this spell at level 5. It costs 3 MP to cast.
The enemies Buffalo wing, Splatypunk, Strangler fish, and Hoodoo gooroo can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation
Sap is already known by Ashlynn upon joining the party, and is learned by the Hero at level 7. No other characters can obtain this spell. It costs 3 MP to cast.
The enemies Stumpkin, Bloodcreeper, Malevolantern, and Marine spirit can use this spell against the party.

Sap costs 3 MP to cast. Maribel Mayde learns it at level 4. Anybody who has taken up the Mage vocation learns it at rank 4, while those who take the path of the Mandrake major learns it at level 2.
It can be used by the enemies Whopper hopper, Crested viper, Tinpot Dictator, Wiz pip, Barracuda, and Setesh the Punisher.

Jessica Albert already knows the Sap spell upon joining the party. It costs 3 MP for her to cast it. In the 3DS version, Morrie can learn the spell by investing 8 points into his Passion skillset.
It can be cast by the enemies Capsichum, Buffalo wing, Sea dragon, and Merman.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Sap is learned by Mages at level 7 and Armamentalists at level 5. It costs 2 MP to cast, and will improve in accuracy once the caster's Magical Might reaches 50. Once the stat value surpasses 999, the spell will become 100% accurate barring monster resistance.
Dragon Quest X
Sap is learned by Minstrels at level 10 and costs 2 MP to cast.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Veronica and Rab have already learned Sap when they join the party. It costs 2 MP to cast and will lower one enemy's Defence by 75% for 4~6 turns, with a base accuracy of 50% and 100% at 799 Magical Might.
Dragon Quest Monsters
This ability can be learned by a variety of monsters. It requires the monster to reach at least level 4 with at least 18 MP, and 15 Intelligence. It is naturally learned by the MadPecker, MadPlant, MedusaEye, Orc, Picky, PutrePup, Skeletor, TreeSlime and Voodoll.

Sap now requires 27 Intelligence to learn. It is learned by the AxeShark, Drygon, LizardFly, Merman and MultiEyes.

Sap can no longer be learned from Diabolist. It can now be learned from Flute Warrior for 5 points or from Morrie's Melange for 8 points.
Dragon Quest Walk
Sap is learned by Mages and Sages at level 15. It reduces the Defence of one enemy by two levels for three turns.
Dragon Quest Tact
Sap is known naturally by Merman and Treevil at level 1 and can be learned by Drackmage and Fandangow at level 16. It costs 9 MP to cast, has a range of three squares away from the caster in any direction, and has a chance to greatly reduce the target's DEF for 3 turns. It can also be taught to any unit by using an ability scroll.
Dragon Quest Treasures
Sap costs 5 MP and will lower one enemy's Defence by 50% for a limited time. It is learned by Dread drackies and Shadows, and will naturally upgrade into Kasap.
