The Gadabout (遊び人, Asobinin) is a recurring vocation in the Dragon Quest series. Design wise, Gadabouts are split between dressing as clowns for men and bunny girls for women, a point of difference between this party-going profession and the more obscure Jester.

Characteristics

Gadabouts march to the beat of their own drum, often ignoring any commands from the player for their own buffoonery that can have positive or negative impacts on the party. The number of possible antics increases with their level or rank, depending on the game, with more extreme actions becoming available. Quite literally a joke character, the Gadabout has poor growth in nearly every attribute, save for their incredible luck in III and a small style boost in VI and VII.

The female Gadabout's design was censored for the HD2D remake of Dragon Quest III by placing a thicker line of fabric across the top of her leotard to partially obscure her cleavage and by extending the bottom portion of the leotard over her tushie to mask her mesh pants.

Appearances

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

Gadabouts, originally localized as goof-offs, are pretty much useless on the battlefield, but do have a great amount of luck. This allows them to avoid the affects of spells and abilities that cause irritating status ailments more often than other characters, such as Sweet Breath and Fuddle. The trade-off for this is the fact that these clowns have minds of their own, and the player cannot always control their actions. The Gadabout is the only class that can turn into a Sage at Alltrades Abbey without the Words of Wisdom, merely needing to reach level 20 to do so. Rather than take a gadabout from the beginning of the journey with this career advancement in mind, some players opt to instead turn an existing character in to a fop and level them up in the safety of their much stronger peers.

Dragon Quest X

Gadabouts were added to the game in the Version 4.3 update. They are the frailest profession in the game as per series tradition, and can make use of Swords Boomerangs, Hammers, Knives, Fisticuffs, Shields, and their personal skillset. Unlike the controlled chaos of the Fortune Teller vocation, the Gadabout is a genuine gambling class where the player puts their fate in the hands of Rubiss. Their clown antics can range from mundane jokes to elaborate performances straight out of a gag manga, and are just as likely to affect their allies as they do the enemy. A Gadabout's Coup de Grâce technique is Hocus Pocus, which has been altered to never hinder the party while still selecting a random effect for enemies.

きまぐれな action list

As mentioned above, these translations are not official and are presented purely as a convenience for English-speaking fans. Each action activates a text box that describes the jest, and the character will make one of three awful puns when performed: this is one of the few times in which the player's avatar speaks in any Dragon Quest game.

まじめにきまぐれ action list

The まじめにきまぐれ (seriously whimsical) are 11 actions that become available once the player has allocated 200 points into the Gadabout's 遊び (play) skill tree, expanding the total number of random actions the character may perform to 26. These japes include:

  • Increasing physical damage by 30% for 60 seconds
  • Increasing all damage types by 50% for 60 seconds
  • Increases the character's tension by 1 or 2 stages
  • Increasing critical hit & haywire spell rates for the character
  • Reducing the charge time of spells & skills by 10 seconds for one minute
  • Increasing how quickly the character moves within the battle zone for 60 seconds
  • Applying Mist Me to the character
  • Becomes immune to ailments & debuffs for 120 seconds
  • Decrease the attack, defence, & action interval speed of all enemies within the immediate vicinity of the character
  • Paralyze, Dazzle, & curse all enemies within the immediate vicinity of the character
  • Planting a bomb with a four second timer, damaging all allies & enemies within range for 1,400~1,700 Fire damage

None of these eleven gags have actual names, the notation for when one activates is simply a text box that states "まじめにきまぐれ!" before describing the effect. The Gadabout will make a pun based on the action, however.

Dragon Quest Walk

Gadabouts and Dancers as they appear in Walk.

Gadabouts, along with Dancers, were added to the game in a September 2020 update. It is available as a basic vocation to players and their weapons of choice are Staves, Spears, and Boomerangs. In battle, they have a chance to completely ignore the player's commands and do a random action instead. As a reference to their first appearance in Dragon Quest III, a gadabout that reaches level 55 is able to become a Sage and they gain some passive bonuses to their magic attributes. In order to become a Luminary, a character must have reached level 50 as a gadabout and dancer.

Notable Gadabouts

  • Selectable vocation in Dragon Quest III.
  • Torneko can be considered a fusion of the Gadabout and Merchant classes, with a little bit of Thief thrown in.
  • Dhoulmagus is referred to by the party and by NPCs as a Jester. Beyond this nomenclature and a superficial resemblance, he has no real relation to the vocation.
  • Known as Player (loose translation) in Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart.
