Savella Cathedral is a town and holy site found in Dragon Quest VIII.

It is located far to the north of the world map and is the residence of the Lord High Priest. The player can visit as soon as one acquires the ship.

Story[edit]

Savella Cathedral is one of the three sacred sites of the world, along with Maella Abbey and the Holy Isle of Neos. It is a popular site for pilgrims around the world to visit.[1]The Lord High Priest lives in a mansion on a rock floating high in the sky, which is held aloft with his power. [2] Only those who have been personally summoned are able to visit the mansion.

It is completely optional to visit Savella Cathedral early on, but if the player attempts to use Ascension Way[3](the elevator that leads to the Lord High Priest's resident), there will be a short scene with Marcello, Angelo's brother. He feigns ignorance of Angelo's existence and brags about his appointment as the master of the Lord High Priest's guard, then departs. There is some resentment towards Marcello's sudden rise to power amongst the clergy and templars of the cathedral as normally only those of patrician upbringing, education, and faith are allowed to serve there.

Much later in the game, the party chases after Evil Sir Leopold with the help of the Godbird's soulstone and the Darktree leaf. The dog eventually leads them to the Lord High Priest's residence, where it breaks through the windows. High Priest Rolo informs the party that the dog is attempting to kill the Lord High Priest and Marcello is no where to be found despite being the captain of the guards. The party is able to subdue the beast and removes Rhapthorne's influence from it. The Lord High Priest loses consciousness after the battle and during the confusion, Marcello suddenly appears and has both the party and High Priest Rolo arrested and sent to Purgatory Island. Afterwards, Marcello picks up the Sceptre and nearly becomes possessed as the others had, but he is able to maintain control by stabbing his arm with a knife.

In the game's ending, the wedding between Princess Medea and Prince Charmles takes place at the cathedral.

  1. Guard at Savella Cathedral: "You must have seen it. The beautiful mansion perched up there on that precarious rock. Looks like it should fall over at any moment, doesn't it? That's the home of the Lord High Priest. Pray to it and the Goddess will reward you with Her divine protection.
  2. NPC at Savella Cathedral: That strange rock doesn't move even in the strongest gale. It's the Lord High Priest's strength that keeps it there. He really is a most incredible man..."
