Appearances

Dragon Quest VIII

Caduceus is a staff technique that both Jessica and Angelo can learn. It requires 57 skill points for Jessica to learn, and 48 skill points for Angelo. When used, HP is restored by 70~100 points for no MP cost and is unaffected by the character's Tension.

Dragon Quest IX

This ability is learned with 44 skill points invested into the Wand skill, and costs 2 MP to use. It restores one character's HP by 75~95 points.

Dragon Quest XI

Veronica can learn Staff of Salvation for 13 skill points in the Heavy Wand skillset of her character builder, while Rab learns it for 5 skill points. When used, it will restore around 50 HP to a single party member for 4 MP, reaching to a maximum of 150 depending on the user's Magical might, rather than their Magical mending.

Etymology

Staff of Salvation's original name, Caduceus, is a staff carried by the Greek messenger god Hermes. It is a short staff entwined with two serpents and oftentimes topped with a pair of wings and has become a representation or symbol of healing. Caduceus is often confused or conflated with the Rod of Asclepius, a staff entwined with only a single serpent associated with Asclepius, a Greek deity of healing and medicine.

In the original Japanese, the ability always shared the same name as the recurring staff which first appeared in Dragon Quest IV. The ability was renamed to reflect this in Dragon Quest XI.
