The Blade of Ultimate Power is recurring sword skill in the series. It is a single target slash charged with non-elemental energy that deals incredible damage for a high MP cost. The skill was exclusive to the seventh game until reappearing in 2016 for the second entry in the Heroes spin off series, and has since been integrated into several titles.

Appearances

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

B.U.P. in the PSX version can be learned by any character who reaches rank 8 of the Champion vocation. It will deal 600~700 damage, minus the foe's defence value, for 20 MP.

In the 3DS and subsequent mobile device ports, B.U.P. takes on different properties; it now deals 500~600 damage that ignores defence and any other damage reduction factors such as Defending Champion. This means the skill works on members of the metal slime family. Furthermore, the damage will increase by 50% if the practitioner is equipped with a weapon that's more effective against the target's monster family. For example, if Aishe is equipped with a Dragonsbane while using the skill on a Drakulard, she can deal up to 900 damage.

Dragon Quest X

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

The Hero will learn the skill for 36 points in his Swordmastery skill tree. It costs 48 MP to use, and will deal up to 680~720 non-elemental damage to one enemy. Unlike previous versions, the skill does not work on metal slimes.

Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End

B.U.P. returns after a long absence as Cesar's Coup de Grâce ability.

Dragon Quest Tact

Ultima Sword can be learned by Anlucia the Luminary at level 54 and costs 70 MP to use. It inflicts 380% potency surehit physical damage to a single enemy. Upgrading the ability increases its damage and reduces the amount of MP it costs to use.

Ultima is derived from the series of computer RPGs, of which Yuji Horii is a fan of and took inspiration from when developing the original Dragon Quest.
