Pruslas is a boss monster introduced in Dragon Quest IV that has since become a recurring enemy species in the series.

Characteristics

Pruslas has piercing blue eyes, red claws, and tiny wings which somehow allow him to fly. He is a large, purple-scaled, lizard-like demon wielding a large club. In more recent games, he has taken to wielding a large, red club in only one hand to distinguish him to his pallet swaps, the Night clubbers and Balzack. Another thing that separates him from those monsters is his size. In the more recent Monsters games that feature size as a gameplay element, he is revealed to be gargantuan compared to the other two and stands shoulder to shoulder with the largest monsters in the series.

Pruslas is very devious and tricky, preferring to get the upper hand in battles by lying and cheating. His manipulative personality is quite helpful to Psaro, as unlike Aamon, he is very loyal.

Appearances

Dragon Quest IV

Pruslas appears as an obese brute holding a huge club. He is one of the four demons found in the endgame maintaining the barrier around Psaro and his stronghold of Castle Nadiria. He may the most devious of the four aside from Aamon, and attempts a cheap shot on the player by trying to convince the Hero to "look behind you" for a treasure, allowing him to get a surprise attack if the player obliges. Pruslas casts Kasap to lower the party's defense, and issues high-power attacks with his club, which has a high chance for a Critical Hit.

Etymology

Pruslas is named after a demon named Pruflas that is listed in the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, an appendix of demonology appearing in the book De praestigiis daemonum written in 1577 by Dutch physician and occultist Johann Weyer. Although Pruflas does not appear in the Ars Goetia, he has an illustration in the Dictionnaire Infernal that corresponds to the demon Purson, who is the fourth demon listed in the Goetia. According to Johann Weyer, Pruflas is a great prince and duke of Hell who has 26 legions of demons under his command. He causes men to commit quarrels, discord, and falsehoods and should never be admitted into any place. However, it conjured, he gives generous and truthful answers to the conjurer. In the Dictionnaire Infernal, Pruflas is depicted as a man with the face of a lion that is riding a bear and carrying a vicious viper in one hand and a trumpet in the other.
