Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

The golden country of the east is being terrorized by a five-headed monster known as Orochi, who demands the sacrifice of young maidens in her volcanic lair on the threat of incinerating the whole population. The empress, Pimiko selects which maiden to be sent off to die for the greater good. When the husband of the previous sacrifice, a renowned swordsmith, freed his wife and fled with her from Jipang it was decided that Yayoi would be her replacement. She was tied with ropes and awaited to be taken to the sacrificial altar within the volcano, but fortunately her boyfriend was part of the group that restrained her and gave her the chance to escape by discreetly loosening her bindings.

Yayoi did not make it far by the time the Hero arrives in Jipang, hiding out in a communal cellar inside of a large pot. The Hero will panic and assume a human head is inside when inspecting the pot before Yayoi reveals herself, begging for the Hero to ignore her. She will tell the Hero the history of her people's light and location of the monster's home, but despairs that the beast is too much for anyone to slay.

When Orochi is killed and her disguise as Pimiko is revealed, Yayoi will be found living with her father.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit]

When the player first enters Jipang a cutscene will play to debrief the situation, where a group of Jipangese express relief that Yayoi has managed to escape but dread the fury of their empress for losing two sacrifices in a row. Yayoi's boyfriend is part of the group and silently prays that she can stay hidden long enough for him to find her, presumably to escape somewhere together as the swordsmith and his wife did before them.

Yayoi, her father, and lover thank the Hero for killing Orochi in a cutscene that plays the morning after the serpent's death. Yayoi shudders to think that monsters are capable of imitating humans and mourns the apparent death of Pimiko, but expresses her boundless gratitude to the Hero and prays for their safety.
