Grand Dragon

From Dragon Quest Wiki

The Grand Dragon is a monster that first appeared in the Game Boy Color remake of Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation. It serves as the definitive superboss, surpassing both Zoma and Xenlon in difficulty.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

The Gran Dragon can be found in the deepest level of the GBC Exclusive bonus dungeon, the Ice Cave. In order to make it to the Gran Dragon, The Hero must have the first 155 Bronze Monster Medals, and the first 155 Silver Monster Medals.

The GranD Dragon attacks exactly as Xenlon does. Defeating him for the first time merits rewarding The Hero with the Rubiss sword. Defeating him in under 18 turns will result in it awarding The Hero with his own Monster Medals. Talking to the Gran Dragon after obtaining all Gold Monster Medals results in the hydra congratulating the player for their hard work, then falling asleep.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit]

The Ice Cave and the monster medal system have been removed from the HD version of the game, with Grand Dragon being relocated to the new Temple of Trials. The method of unlocking the final bonus dungeon remains the same, however.

Defeating Grand Dragon within 20 turns yields no reward beyond his complimenting the player and the Grand Medal, an item that only serves as a bragging right.

Note that while Grand Dragon has no resistance to debuffs and turn-wasting ailments he is in fact programmed to burn through them faster, shaving 1 turn off of the duration of each.

Trivia[edit]

  • Originally the requirement for battling the Gran Dragon was to have all 164 Gold Monster Medals (as well as all 164 of the Bronze and Silver Medals).
  • Grand Dragon remained exclusive to the GBC port of Dragon Quest III for sixteen years until returning to the series in Joker 3 in 2016.
