The Dream-Whisperer is the chief servant to the Goddess Rubiss who was added to Dragon Quest III in the 1996 remake, where she assessed the Hero's personality through the Dream Scenario in the game's opening. Her role has been expanded in the HD-2D remakes of the Erdrick Trilogy and the HD remake of the original game and its sequel in particular, where she receives a proper name and is revealed to be the leader of the faeries who dwell in the underworld.

Appearance and personality[edit]

The Dream-Whisperer is a faerie and in the 1996 Super Famicom version of the game she used the same sprite as the Queen of Faeries. The HD-2D version gives her a design of her own, where she is a blonde woman wearing a red dress with puffy white shoulders. Her accessories are a pair of gold bracers with a matching brooch set with a large, green gem, and and a blue staff topped with a golden apple ornament set with another green gem. As with all faeries in the underworld she now has a set of four translucent wings.

Her personality is not conveyed through her dialogue in the 1996 version of the game beyond being an astute observer of human character and speaking in the laid-back, child-like manner typical of her kind. The additional lines of dialogue in the HD-2D version give her a proper sense of character, however, depicting her as a faithful devout to her Goddess who does all she can to aid in her restoration. She develops a certain fondness for the Hero over the course of the game through her dream guidance, having total confidence that they will bring peace to the world.

The Dream-Whisperer has a more friendly attitude towards Rubiss, regarding her as more a colleague or close associate. Unlike most faeries, she bears no ill will towards humans, usually contacting Erdrick's descendants in their dreams. Despite her calm disposition, Dream-Whisperer is silently furious at the Dragonlord's attacks on the faeries, and remains defiant against whatever threats may come.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake[edit]

The Dream-Whisperer is attempting to summon Rubiss back to the world after the Goddess' disappearance, though she is driven off by the Dragonlord's army following his initial invasion of Faerie Village. The faeries Arm-Twister and Day-Dreamer ask the Hero to find her after he finds them within Craggy Cave.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]

The Dream-Whisperer now resides within the Faerie Palace, built in the century between the events of I and II as a response to the Dragonlord's attack on Faerie Village that slaughtered many of them. She initially contacts the Luminaries when they stay in the inn in Rippleport, beckoning them to the Shrine of Rain to see Over-Seer. As a Keeper, she is able to communicate with the other keepers, including her right-hand, Over-Seer over long distances. During the events of the game, Belial invades the Faerie Palace, and following his initial defeat and revealing that his colleague, Mariella, is invading Mersea, Dream-Whisperer directs the Luminaries towards Mersea. She also gives them Lorelei's Harp in order for them to travel underwater.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

The servant of Rubiss speaks to the Hero in a dream on the morning of their sixteenth birthday, during which she poses a series of questions to assess the personality of the world's savior. Depending on the player's answers her assessment can be rather blunt, and it is implied that she is the mysterious voice that speaks to the Hero upon the vanquishing of Baramos.

Much later, after entering the underworld, the Hero will meet the servant of Rubiss face-to-face in the Shrine of the Spirit. Here she will give the player the staff of rain in order to be combined with the sunstone to create the rainbow drop and reach the devil's castle. She will also make a half-hearted apology if she spoke too harshly of the Hero during the Dream Scenario evaluation at the beginning of the game. During the finale she will thank the Hero for saving her world, and tell them that Rubiss is looking forward to meeting them again some day.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit]

The servant of Rubiss has been promoted to a major character through the scenario additions to the game, where in she now watches over the Hero throughout the journey and gives the player guidance after major events. Specifically, she will speak in the Hero's dreams after obtaining the ship in Portoga to inform the player of the Six Orbs being vital to the quest's success, congratulate the Hero after slaying the wicked Orochi, and tells the Hero to seek out the boatman's bone and the Mountaincleaver sword after bringing peace to Manoza. It is also confirmed that she is indeed the voice who speaks to the Hero after Baramos' defeat.

When speaking to her in the Shrine of the Spirit, she will explain that chose to contact the Hero herself due to the Goddess' petrification. Her apology for any rudeness during the Dream Scenario is less flimsy as well, and gives the Hero clear instructions to free Rubiss from her eponymous tower where Zoma imprisoned her. After handing over the staff of rain she will take flight to spread glittering dust from her wings over the party, restoring their HP and MP. Her dialogue during the ending remains the same as in the 16-bit remake.
