The King of Alefgard is the ruling monarch of Alefgard in the distant past, being the ancestor of King Lorik. In the Japanese script he is established as the founder of the ruling family seen throughout the Erdrick trilogy through his title of ラルス一世 (Rarusu the First) (Lorik I in English), with his descendant the king of the original game being ラルス十六代 (Rarusu the Sixteenth) (Lorik XVI in English).

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]
The King rules from Tantegel castle where he welcomes the Hero and the party when they enter his throne room, and he is astonished that outsiders have come from the world above. He regretfully states that he cannot offer better tidings due to the blight of darkness cast over his realm by Zoma, but he hopes that the presence of outsiders will lift his people's spirits.
When the Hero kills Zoma and restores the light of day to Alefgard the King will bestow the highest honour possible, the title of Erdrick, which means "dwelling-land" in the ancient tongue. The King laments that the gap between worlds seems to have closed, but swears that Erdrick's deeds will be etched into the history of the land forevermore.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit]
The King's personality has been altered slightly in the HD version, now refusing to give in to despair in spite of the constant suffering Zoma inflicts upon his subjects. His dialogue is also rewritten to center around Ortega, who received considerably more focus in this version of the game.
The King summons the Hero to his throne upon entering Tantegel castle upon hearing word of strangers in the land. He deduces that the Hero is the child of Ortega, explaining how the long-lost father was found with severe burns by one of his guards approximately a decade ago. Ortega would recover from his wounds in the castle infirmary but had lost all of his memories save for his own name, and the King granted him permission to live in the castle. Ortega served the king for a period before suddenly vanishing one day; the King encourages the Hero to seek out Ortega and is confident father and child will be reunited ere long.
The King will also mention that Robbin' 'Ood entered his lands a short while before the Hero, and dismisses him as a con-artist rotting in jail.
