Tidal Wave is an ability in the Dragon Quest series. It sends a wave of water crashing down on the enemy, with the exact damage and element varying between games.
Appearances
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
Tidal wave is an enemy only skill in the remakes of IV, being used by the Shelligator. Because the monster only appears in the fungeon, the skill's paltry damage range is hardly anything to worry about by that point in average playthroughs.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation
Tidal Wave is learned by Shelley at level 17. Other characters can obtain it by advancing to Rank 4 of the Sage vocation. It deals 30~40 woosh-type damage and is affected by Insulatle. It cannot be used in doors or underwater when used by party members, and has a 33% chance to fail upon use.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
The Sailor can learn Tsunami at rank 8 in the PSX version and carried the same aspects as in the previous game.
- Tsunami has been removed from the game in the 3DS version due to the real-life tragedy of the 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake. Instead, monsters use a weakened Jolly Rager for the same damage range.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Tidal wave is used by the Lleviathan for a slightly weaker, non-elemental 30~37 damage.
Dragon Quest Monsters 2
Tidal wave costs 15 MP to use and has a damage range of 150~180. It is learned by the Bubblemon, Frightbait, Killer wave, and WhaleMage monsters if they have reached level 19 with a max HP of 112, an attack of 114, and an agility of 138.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Tidal wave is an ice-attribute skill with a minimum damage range of 108~133 and a maximum range of 337~349. The skill is neither a spell nor a breath attack, meaning it can penetrate the usual defences and only an ice resistance lowers the damage range.
It can be learned with 55 points in the Diamagon II skill.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2
Tidal Wave costs 25 MP to cast. It can still be learned from Diamagon II, as well as from:
- Aquarion (80 points)
- Dorsal fiend (70 points)
- Khalamari (65 points)
- Wildcard (24 points)
Great Tidal Wave
Starting with IX, a higher level form of Tidal Wave was introduced as a monster-only skill. The Great Tidal Wave's damage depends on the monster causing it, with Lleviathan's hitting for 70~90, the boa bishop's 100~120, and the Seavern's for a massive 135~163.
