Lightning Slash is a recurring skill in the series. Contrary to its name, it used the power of the Bang series of spells for its appearances in mainline games instead of the Zap spells, likely due to balancing issues over how very few monster has resistance to lightning. However in the Monsters spin off series of games, it uses the Zap element and this has since become standard in every appearance it makes in a spin off title.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation
Lightning Slash deals variable melee damage, with the power being dependent on the target's resistance to the Bang element. Possible modifiers are 130%, 115%, 75%, and 30%. It is learned by advancing to rank 3 of the Armamentalist vocation.
The reason for this deceitful discrepancy is likely balance concerns, as only a handful of monsters can resist lighting and thus the skill would be too easy to abuse.
It is used by the enemies Bad karmour, and Zombie gladiator.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
Lightning Slash is performed and acquired in the same way as before, by advancing to rank 3 as an Armamentalist. In the original Sony PlayStation version, BoltSlash could also be learned by a Esterk at the first rank. Alternatively, it is also learned by advancing to rank two as a Hero in the 3DS version of the game.
It is also used by Maeve in the short amount of time she joins the party. The only enemy to use it is Ceramic sergeant.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Thunder Slash is an enemy-only skill used by Phantom fencers, Riptides, and Zombie gladiators.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Thunder Slash is used by the aquatic Riptides, and players may duplicate the technique by way of the Armamentalist's Gale Fource. DQIX has been balanced so that the double attribute nature of this technique will not negate the effectiveness of one element over the other.
Dragon Quest Monsters
BoltSlash is a normal attack that deals increased damage based on the target's lightning resistance. It can be learned naturally by ArcDemon, BoneSlave, Coatol, EvilArmor, HornBeet, LandOwl, RotRaven, and ZapBird as long as it is a level 11 and has 77 max HP, 34 max MP, 66 Attack, and 42 Intelligence. BoltSlash can also be learned by any monster that knows both the ChargeUP and Lightning skills.
Dragon Quest Monsters 2
BoltSlash now requires 74 intelligence to learn. It is naturally learned by the CancerMan, FishRider, Roboster2.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Lightning Slash costs 2 MP and strikes a single enemy with 110% of the user's attack, inflicting Zap-element damage. It can be learned from various skill trees.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2
In the English version, Lightning Slash's name was changed to Charring Slash as it now dealt a combination of Zap and Sizz-element damage, defaulting to the least-resisted element for damage caluclation. The point requirement for Thunderwind Slashes has changed. It could now also be learned from the following skills:

Dragon Quest Tact
Lightning Slash is known naturally by Firebird, Foo dog, Hawk man, Mad mole, Mandrake major, and Thunderbird at level 1 and can be learned by Bewarewolf and Leery lout at level 16. It costs 3 MP to use and inflicts 120% potency Zap-type physical damage to a single enemy. It can also be taught to any unit by using an ability scroll.

Amber drackies are the only monsters to learn Lightning Slash, and it deals Electricity-element slashing damage for 4 MP.
