Lord Rhapthorne is the central antagonist of Dragon Quest VIII. A demon of untold legend, Rhapthorne is the party's final opponent in their quest to rid the world of an evil curse.
Characteristics
Rhapthorne had power over the World of Darkness and planned to take control of the World of Light, but was stopped by the Seven Sages with the help of Empyrea, the Godbird. He returned centuries later to kill the heirs of Seven Sages and take over the World of Light.
In a break from the series' tradition of the Archfiend being a distant figure removed from much of the narrative, Rhapthorne is actually present from the very beginning of the game thanks to his possession of Dhoulmagus. He is aware of the party's actions against him from the start, and as such his loathing for them is significantly more personal than that of final foes past.
Abilities
The little twerp has a nasty resistance to all three types of flame on top of sap, but he doesn't have any other strengths besides that. Dazzleflash and Lullab-eye can get annoying, but the glorified anemone doesn't bring too much to the table that can give players a hard time.
Once his shield is broken, Rhapthorne can be attacked in earnest. He has no resistance to elemental damage, a 25% resistance to sap, and immunity to all other debilitation. He'll put his girth to use when swiping with his arm, dealing 100~120 defense piercing damage, and can knock out a character after it connects. The ball on his scepter will deal 281 points of pierce damage to two random targets, and can confuse a character. Anger of the Gods will deal 84~96 points of bang damage to four random targets. Because his physical skills ignore defence, Kabuff is useless; cast Acceleratle to boost evasion and Insulatle to take the sting out of his breath attacks. Anger of the Gods can devastate the party if the player isn't careful while praying, so don't be afraid to take a turn to heal. Rhapthorne's random targeting can be tricky to counter, but as long as the party is above 50% health throughout the battle, victory is assured.
3DS Abilities
- Party members cannot be switched out during the final battle as the wagon is left behind.

Some say his body is so big that is contains enough cursed power to contort the space-time continuum itself."
