Wave of Panic is a recurring skill in the Dragon Quest series, first introduced in Dragon Quest Monsters and made infamous in Dragon Quest IX.
It is a blast of maddening darkness that debilitates even the most dauntless characters.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]
Wave of Panic is a group targeting skill exclusive to the Geothaum, Equinox, and Barbarus. It lowers a character's Defence and agility by 50% for 7~10 turns.
Dragon Quest X[edit]
Wave of Panic was added to the game in the the version 3.3 update. It reduces all stats by two stages for 120 seconds, and also reduces the HP of the target by 46%.
Dragon Quest Monsters 1 & 2[edit]
Known as UltraDown in this game, it will inflict Sap, Slow, and Surround on one foe. If multiple enemies are present, the target is selected randomly. In the first game, UltraDown takes 7 MP to use, and requires the user to be level 21 with 110 max MP and an INT stat of 150 to learn. In the second game, the INT requirement has increased to 270. Rosevine, Titanis, and DeathMore (Transformed) naturally learn the skill.
- UltraDown can also be learned by any monster that knows the Defense, SlowAll, and Surround spells. If a monster has learned both UltraDown and Surge, they can combine into DeMagic.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit]
Wave of Panic costs 7 MP to use and will reduce the physical Attack damage, Defence, Agility, and Wisdom of a single enemy, weakening them for several turns. The effectiveness is based on the target's Whack resistance. The skill can be learned from:
- Cursader (17 points)
- Dr. Snapped (40 points)
- Dragonlord (60 points)
- Estark (70 points)
- Niflheim (76 points)
- Nightmare (50 points)
- Reaper (84 points)
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit]
Wave of Panic now reduces the target's Attack instead of attack damage in this game, with the effect lasting between 2 to 7 turns. It can be learned from all the skills it could be previously, though ♧Estark now requires 80 points. It can now be learned from Thornella for 100 points or from Vile Void for 23 points.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]
Wave of Panic reduces attack power by 25% for 2~5 turns, and all other stats by 40% for 4~7 turns. Being a skill, the chance of success is not influenced by a monster's wisdom stat. Wave of Panic is learned via the Barbarus, Calasmos, Dragonlord, Estark, Fuzzy Thinker, Jasper Unbound, Malroth, Scruffy, and Wyrmhole Dragon talents. Additionally, the Rando-Panic trait has a low chance to duplicate the effect of the skill at the start of every turn.
Dragon Quest Tact[edit]
Known as Dark Wave in this game, it is known naturally by Dr. Snapped at level 1 and costs 24 MP to use. It has a range of up to three squares away from him and can occasionally lower the ATK, DEF, WIS, and AGL of a single enemy for three turns. Dr. Snapped can also learn the perk Sporadic Dark Wave Stance with 50 awakening points, which allows him to occasionally counterattack with Dark Wave if he is attacked by an enemy within a 1 to 3-space range.
