Bang is a spell in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest III, it pulverizes all targets with a forceful explosion. It is related to the stronger spells Boom, Kaboom, and Kaboomle, each subsequent spell increasing the intensity of the expulsion until the very earth beneath the foes is razed by the blast.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

Bang makes its debut appearance, dealing 16~24 damage to all enemies and costs 5 MP to cast. Mages and Sages have a 12 chance to learn it starting at level 11, based on their Wisdom.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

Bang is learned by Maya at level 11. It costs 5 MP to cast and hits enemies for 16~24 points of damage. It can also be cast by using the Magma staff as a tool in battle.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]

Bang damages all enemies for 20~30 damage and costs 5 MP to cast. Once again, it can be cast by using the Magma staff as a tool in battle, as well as the Circle of Fire.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

Milly learns this spell at level 15, and is the only party member to obtain it. It damages all enemies for 5 MP, and deals between 20~30 damage.

On the enemy side, it can be cast by Darkgoyles.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

Sir Mervyn already knows Bang when he joins the party. It costs 5 MP to cast, and damages all enemies between 20~30 points of damage. In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Maribel learns the spell at level 9 instead of Retaliate. It cannot be learned by any vocation. Bang can also be cast by both Zev and Old Man Riffer when they assist the party as NPCs.

On the enemy side, it can be cast by Cheeky devils, Scargoyles, Conkjurers, Gobblers, Cardinal Sin, Grimoires, Strangler fishes, and Fire frys.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

Bang is learned by Jessica at level 14 and once again costs 5 MP to cast. It deals 16~24 base damage to all enemies, capping at 36~45 once her Wisdom reaches 100.

Anchormen are also able to cast it.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

Bang can be learned by Mages at level 11 and Sages at level 8. It costs 5 MP to cast, and deals 15~30 base Lightning/Explosion damage to all enemies. Once the caster's Magical Might surpasses 65, the spell will slowly grow in power and cap off at 70~80 once the stat reaches 999. Bang is also required in order to complete Quest #116: Sagier and Pagier.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Mages will learn Bang at level 12 and Sages at level 10, with both casting it for 4 MP. The spell deals a minimum of 24~27 Light damage to all enemies in a 5 meter radius of the caster, with a maximum range of 66~70 at 336 Magical Might.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

Veronica will learn Bang at level 13, and the Luminary at level 15. It costs 6 MP to cast and will deal up to 44~52 Light damage at 195 Magical Might.

Dragon Quest Monsters[edit]

Bang is learned by monsters beginning at level 4 if they have at least 13 max MP and 26 Intelligence. It is learned naturally by Akubar, ArcDemon, Balzak, Baramos, BoneSlave, Coatol, DarkHorn, GoatHorn, Hargon, LandOwl, Metabble, and Mirudraas. Bang will naturally upgrade into Boom and Explodet as the monster levels up. [1]

Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit]

Bang now requires 47 Intelligence to learn. It is naturally learned by Darck, Gorago, Hargon and Orgodemir. It is no longer naturally learned by the LandOwl.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit]

Bang costs 5 MP to cast and will deal a maximum damage range of 71~79. It can be learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit]

Bang deals a minimum of 19~23 damage and a maximum of 74~78. It can no longer be learned from Bombardier. It can now be also be learned with 6 points in Bang & Sizz.

Terry's Wonderland 3D & Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit]

Bang costs 5 MP and deals 19~21 damage, rising to 76~84 at 499 Wisdom.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit]

Bang has the same attributes as in the previous two games.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]

Bang costs 5 MP and is learned through the Bang Afficionado, Bombshell, and Mad Scientist talents. It has a base power of 20 and will deal at average of 80 damage at 499 Wisdom.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below[edit]

Bang is the main spell that Nera can cast in battle. She will set off a small explosion in front of her for 7 MP. If used in conjunction with the magical bubbles unleashed with her wand, she will cause them to explode, as well. As her level increases, Nera can upgrade the spell and also cast Boom and Kaboom by charging up Bang.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit]

Bang can be known naturally by Drackymas, Hat hamwitches, Jade slimes, Metal king slimes, Pearly wights, and Sham hatwitches at level 1, deals Explosion-element damage, and costs 5 MP to cast. It will automatically upgrade to Boom at level 18.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit]

Bang is known naturally by Alphyn, Minidemon, and Moosifer at level 1 and can be learned by Bushy baby, Crack-billed platypunk, and Imp at level 16. It costs 8 MP to cast, has a range of two squares away from the caster in any direction, and inflicts minor Bang-type spell damage to all enemies in a plus sign-shaped area of effect. It can also be taught to any unit by using an ability scroll.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai: A Hero's Bonds[edit]

Bang appeared as a spell for Popp and the Luminary Leader as a Mage. It inflicts magical Light enemies to all enemies in a wide area around the target and would temporarily lower their Physical and Magical Defence.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Bang is available via the Command Selection, and costs 9 MP. The spell sends out a small orb of energy in front of the Hero that will explode upon contact with an enemy or after enough distance has been covered, with the blast dealing fair knockback and 15.5% damage.

Enemy versions[edit]

Monsters finally learn to cast the spell in VI, and it deals 15~20 damage to the entire party. The spell would be forgotten in VIII and return in IX where it deals 15~25 damage.
