Lightning is an ability in the Dragon Quest series. Unless otherwise stated, it pulls down bolts from the sky for 50~70 damage for no MP cost, and is typically learned by bruiser types rather than casters.

Dragon Quest IV
Lightning is an enemy-only skill that is used by the Demon thunderer in the remakes of IV, dealing 35~45 blast damage to all allies.
Dragon Quest V
Lightning is learned by several monster companions such as the old man of the sea and bomboulder. In the Super Famicom version, the skill dealt Zap damage, but in all other versions is uses the Bang element.

Dragon Quest VI
Lightning is learned by advancing to rank 3 of the Luminary vocation. Despite all appearances, the skill belongs to the Bang family of spells much like the Lightning Slash. In the Super Famicom version, Lightning can also be learned by the Lesser demon at level 15.
Dragon Quest VII
Lightning was nerfed in the 3DS version, with a new range of 30~50. In the original PlayStation version, Lightning is a hybrid skill that can be learned by advancing to rank 5 as a Mage or Sailor immediately after completing the other. It can also be learned by mastering the Serial quiller vocation. In the 3DS version, hybrid skills no longer exist and Lightning is learned normally by mastering the Sailor vocation.
Dragon Quest VIII
An enemy only skill, Lightning deals 28~36 damage. It can be used by Phantom swordsman, Demon thunderer, and Hellstalker.
Dragon Quest IX
Lightning grew weaker in IX, dealing only 17~26 damage. It can be used by Cumulus rex, Wyrtoise, and Master of Nu'un. Stronger variants debuted, however, as detailed below.
Dragon Quest X
Lightning can be learned by Druids by allocating 80 skill points into their Summon skill and costs 18 MP to use. In this game, it actually inflicts lightning damage, dealing around 135~165 damage to enemies around the user and having a chance to inflict paralysis. Once the user's magical might surpasses 350, it increases in potency, reaching to a maximum of 835~865 at 1,350 magical might.
Dragon Quest XI
Lightning returns to being an enemy-only skill that can be used by various monsters, including 24-carrot bunicorns, Electric needlers, and Old men of the sea. The 24-carrot bunicorn and old men of the sea's version inflicts around 40 damage, while the version used by electric needlers and vicious old men of the sea inflicts around 100 damage.
Dragon Quest Monsters
Lightning requires the monster to reach level 10 with 65 HP, 90 attack and 52 agility. It is naturally learned by the Balzak, Darkdrium, MetalKing, Mirudraas, NiteWhip, RotRaven, SlimeBorg, Tortragon, WhiteKing and ZapBird.
Dragon Quest Monsters 2
The requirements to learn Lightning are unchanged. It is naturally learned by the Angleron, FooHero, LordDraco, Poseidon and Skularach.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Lightning can be learned with 60 points in Wulfspade.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2
Lightning can still be learned from Wulfspade, as well as from Über Zapologist for 12 points.
Dragon Quest Tact
Lightning can be learned naturally by Man o' war at level 20, Wyrtle at level 26, Cyber slime at level 28, and King slime at level 44 and costs 26 MP to use. It deals moderate Zap-type martial damage to all enemies in a radius of 1 around the user.

Dragon Quest IX
Dealing 28~43 damage, Terrible Lightning is utilized by Greygnarl, Cumulus vex, and Corvus.

Apocalyptic Lightning
Dragon Quest IX
Two types of A.P. are used in IX; one for the Wonder wyrtles and Greygnarl that deals 162~197 damage, and another for Murdaw which bases its damage range on his level.
For the latter, the calculation is (70 + level^2 / 22) * 0.9~1.1 for a minimum of 162~198 and a cap of 454~555.
