Weird Dance is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series that first appeared in Dragon Quest II as an enemy-exclusive ability before later being able to be used by the player in Dragon Quest V. It reduces the MP of the target, and is related to the skills Weirder Dance and Weirdest Dance which are stronger versions of this skill in the mainline games.

It is important to note that Weird Dance does not drain the target's MP into the user, it simply deletes it. The Tap Dance technique is what siphons MP into the dancer.

Appearances

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line

Weird Dance is used by Eyelasher, Heyedra, Mud mannequin, Magic marionette, and Treevil. It reduces approximately 1/4th of a character's MP in the NES version, and only 3~8 MP in all subsequent versions.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

Weird Dance drains 5~10 MP and is used by monsters such as the Catula.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

Weird Dance removes 7~11 MP and is used by Lugworm, Peeper, Damselfly, and Sasquash. It is a random skill that Torneko Taloon will sometimes use in Chapters 5 & 6, and also by Tom Foolery, and their versions remove 15~20 MP.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

Weird Dance is learned by several monster companions such as the Goodybag. MP reduced is 1~2, being the weakest of its skill group. This set the standard for all monster versions of the skill. Hula ghoul uses it as an enemy.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

Weird Dance is learned by advancing to either rank 3 of the Dancer Vocation or rank 4 of the Merchant vocation. In this installment the skill received the same upgrade as Drain Magic, meaning that the MP deleted is the user's level/4 +5.

It is used by the monsters Sluggernaut, Mud mannequin, Magic marionette, Mad mallard, and Crayzee. The monster version is much weaker than the player's, only removing 1~2 MP.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

Weird Dance is learned at Rank 3 of the Dancer vocation in the PS1 and 3DS versions of the game. In the original it uses the level-based calculations as in VI, but in the remake it merely removes 5~12 MP regardless of level.

It can be used by the monsters Mimic, Mud mannequin, Bag o' laughs, Prancing pillar, Cavorting column, Elepus, and Scarfish.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Weird Dance removes 1~2 MP and is used by Treefaces and Mud mannequins. The only Infamous Monster with access to it is Mudison.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

Used as a dance by certain monsters like the Bag o' laughs, deleting 1~2 MP.

Dragon Quest Monsters

Called OddDance in this game, this ability can be learned by various monsters. It requires the monster to be at least Level 10, with at least 54 HP, 27 MP, 63 Agility, and 49 Intelligence. It grows into RobDance when the monster reaches at least level 12 with at least 68 HP, 39 MP, 85 Agility and 61 Intelligence. Is is naturally learned by the CactiBall, CatFly, Copycat, FaceTree, GiantWorm, MadGoose and MudDoll.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2

OddDance now requires 89 Intelligence to learn and 110 to upgrade to RobDance. It is naturally learned by the Brushead, Eggplaton, Octoreach, Puppetor, Slurperon and Starfish. It is no longer naturally learned by the MadGoose.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
