Crackle is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series, and the second of the ice family.

It lacerates one group of enemies with a volley of ice spears. It is related to the spells Crack, Kacrack, and Kacrackle.

The spell is associated with the icicle dirk, being cast whenever the dagger is used as an item in battle.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

Crackle is learned by Mages and Sages at level 20 and deals around 42~58 points of damage for 6 MP. It can also be cast by using the blizzard blade as a tool in battle. On the monster side, Crackle can be cast by freezing fogs, merkings, and shadows. In the NES version of Dragon Warrior III, it is called SnowBlast, while in the Game Boy version it is called SnowStorm.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

Crackle is learned by Borya at level 12. Crackle targets a group of monsters for 5 MP, and deals around 35~45 damage to each. In the NES version of Dragon Warrior IV, it is called Snowstorm.

The enemies spinchilla, Baalzack, moosifer, Kirk Buzzer, and the third form of Psaro the Manslayer can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]

Crackle deals between 42~58 points of damage to an enemy group for 5 MP, and is learned by the following party members.

Name Level
Moosifer 1
Old man of the sea 1
Blizzybody 12
Madchen 14
Powie yowie 15
Jailcat 16
Man o' war 30

Chimaera Pawn, hypothermion, and pazuzu use it as enemies.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

This spell is learned by advancing to rank 6 of the Mage vocation. It deals between 42~58 points of damage for 5 MP.

It is also used by merkings.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

Crackle is learned by advancing to rank 8 of the Mage vocation, and is used by High Priestess Jacqueline when she assists the party as an uncontrollable NPC.

It can be cast by the enemies snow slime, very devil, necromacer, briny mine, nava, biting batboon, skeleton squire, bone baron, and abyss diver.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

Crackle is learned by Jessica Albert at level 16. It impales an enemy group for 30~40 before her Wisdom hits 100, with a maximum of 73~86 once her Wisdom reaches 200. It costs 5 MP to cast.

It is also used by the enemies Trap box, Abyss diver, Frogman, and Mushroom mage.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

Learned by: Mage Level 16 Minstrel Level 16, and cast by both for 8 MP. Rips into a group of enemies with sharp icicles. Base damage is 42~58 before the caster's Magical Might exceeds 100, and the cap is 142~157 at 999 Magical Might.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Mages will learn Crackle at level 24, Minstrels at level 25, and Death Masters at level 69. It can also be learned by Jailcat as a monster companion with the Crack Knowledge skill tree for 12 skill points. It costs 8 MP to cast with a range of 15 meters, and the base damage range is 34~42. Higher damage is calculated as Magical Might x 0.245 +18.5 for a cap of 132~140. As the game is 3D, the traditional system of enemy groups no longer exists and instead the damage is focused on one target, with enemies in that target's immediate vicinity also taking damage.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

Veronica will learn Crackle at level 26, and Rab will have already learned it by the time he joins the party. It costs 8 MP to cast and will have a base range of 40~56, growing to 88~104 once either character's Magical Might hits 249.

Dragon Quest Monsters[edit]

SnowStorm deals 42-58 points of ice damage to all enemies for 5 MP. It will be learned naturally by any monster that could learn IceBolt at level 12 as long as they have 42 max MP and 60 INT, which includes 1EyeClown, BigEye, GoatHorn, IceMan, Metaly, Mommonja, Servant, Snaily, TreeBoy, WindBeast, and Yeti. It will naturally upgrade into Blizzard as the monster levels up.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit]

Crackle costs 5 MP, deals up to 150~170 damage, and can be learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit]

Crackle deals 37~40 base damage and up to 154~157. It can no longer be learned from Aquapothecary or Niflheim. It can now be learned from:

Terry's Wonderland 3D & Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit]

Crackle costs 12 MP, dealing 38~42 damage and up to 152~168 once the monster's Wisdom hits 699.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit]

Crackle has the same attributes as in the previous two Monsters games.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]

Crackle costs 12 MP and is learned via the Crack Afficionado, Crack Virtuoso, Freeze, Frosty Receptionist, and Thrill-Seeker talents. It has a base power of 40 and will deal an average of 160 damage at 699 Wisdom.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below[edit]

Crackle is the second tier spell of Jessica and can be learned by investing 8 skill points. By charging her Crack spell for a short time, she can cast Crackle, which creates a burst of ice crystals that have a chance of freezing enemies in front of her for 13 MP. As she levels up more, she will be able to upgrade the spell and learn Kacrack.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit]

Crackle costs 10 and deals Ice-element damage. It is learned by cutie slimes, silhouettes, pearly wights, queen slimes, and tundrackies.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit]

Crackle can be learned naturally by hypothermion and mushroom mage at level 20, umbra at level 22, drohl drone, slimecicle and Krystalinda at level 26, blizzybody at level 32, and moosifer and tortured soul at level 46. It costs 24 MP to cast, has a range of three squares in front of the caster, and inflicts moderate Crack-type spell damage to all enemies in a range of three squares horizontally.

It can also be taught to any unit by using an ability scroll, which is received as a reward for completing of Chapter 7, Episode 5 of the main storyline, as well as from the seventh stages of king kelp's, Krystalinda's, and Maldragora the Worldbreaker's Battle Roads.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai[edit]

Many characters in the series are capable of casting Crackle and it is one of the spells that Popp knows at the beginning of the story. He first demonstrates the spell to Dai on Dermline Island by freezing a wave off the coast solid.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai: A Hero's Bonds[edit]

Crackle appears as a spell for Matoriv and the Luminary Leader. It is a long-range attack that inflicts magical Ice damage over a wide area. The main way to unlock the spell is during Matoriv's Cool-Headed Grand Sorcerer event or through the shop exchange.

Enemy versions[edit]

Crackle will deal 32~42 damage when used by a monster. Incredibly, the spell would keep this range all the way until VIII, in which it deals 24~32 damage. In IX it deals 25~40.
