Sizz | |
---|---|
Japanese | ギラ |
Rōmaji | Gira |
Type | Offensive |
Older names | Hurt Firebal |
Sizz is a spell in the Dragon Quest series. It is the premier offensive spell, introduced in the original Dragon Quest, and is often learned by Mages and other practitioners of offensive magic.
Immediately as of Dragon Quest III, Sizz was a single fireball that attacks a single enemy. Ever since then, Sizz is now depicted as a line of fire that attacks a group of enemies; Frizz would now take Sizz's place as a single fireball that hits one enemy. The flames intensify and movements grow more elaborate as the spell line advances.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest[edit]
Sizz is one of the two damaging spells in the game.
Name | Learned | MP Cost | Effect | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
NES | GBC | 日本語 (JP) | |||
Hurt | Firebal | ギラ (Gira) | Lv.4 | 2 | Damages the enemy for 5~12 HP (16~20 in the remakes) |
Sizz may fail to deal damage depending on the enemy's resistance to fire spells.
The enemies metal slime, drackolyte, drackyma, raving lunatick, prestidigitator, legerdeman, fightgeist, and spitegeist can use this spell against the player.
Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]
The Prince of Cannock learns this spell at level 3. It deals 15~25 damage the original version, but increased in the game's remakes, now dealing 16~20. and will cost 2 MP in these versions.
- Starting with the smartphone remake, the spell has been changed to adhere to the latter series convention, now hitting one group of enemies for 10~17 damage for 3 MP.
The enemies ghoul, dragonfry, metal slime, magus, and shaman can use this spell against the party.
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]
Sizz is learned by Mages and Sages at level 7 and the Hero at level 10 depending on their Wisdom stat. It deals 16~24 damage for 4 MP. This entry is when the spell first gained its ability to hit a group of enemies.
The enemies ram raider, killerpillar, and rumble bee can use this spell against the party.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]
Sizz is learned by Maya at level 7 and the Hero at level 11. Laurel knows the spell upon joining Torneko Taloon. It costs 4 MP to cast.
On the enemy side, Jinksters, Pteranodons, Flamethrowers, Psaro's Pawn, Balzack, Marquis de Léon, and Prima Donna can use this spell against the party. However, in remake versions of the game, jinksters will fail at casting it since they don't have enough MP.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
Name | Level |
---|---|
Honey | -- |
Liquid metal slime | -- |
Prestidigitator | 5 |
Conkjurer | 5 |
Bianca Whitaker | 8 |
Ghost | 10 |
The targets' resistances to fire spell affects the damage dealt, rather than the chance of this spell missing. Haunted Housekeeper, legerdeman, sizzard and hocus chimaera use it only as an enemy.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]
Sizz is learned by Ashlynn at level 6, and is already known by Mercury upon joining. Other characters can learn it by advancing to rank 2 of the Mage vocation.
The enemies hell niño, blooming sorcerer, babygoyle, goodybag, dread herring, First Test, liquid metal slime, and metal king slime use this spell against the party.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]
Sizz is already known by Aishe when she joins the party and can be learned by other characters immediately upon becoming a Mage in all versions of the game. It can also be learned by advancing to rank 5 as a Serial quiller.
It can be cast by the enemies shaman, numpton, liquid metal slime, cannibox, urnexpected, Grody Gumpdrops, and conkjurer.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]
Game | Description |
Singes a group of enemies with a blazing fire.[1] |
Sizz is learned by both the Hero and Jessica Albert at level 11. It deals an average of 16~24 damage and will increase in power once the character's Wisdom surpasses 40, capping at 29~35 once they reach 70 Wisdom.
The enemies Geyzer, Frogface, Cannibox, and Liquid metal slime can use it. The Infamous Monsters Metabble (Recruit) and Snap Case can also use it.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]
Sizz and its advanced incarnations do not appear in IX, though their effects can be replicated by use of weapons such as the Cautery sword.
Dragon Quest X[edit]
The Sizz line did not initially appear at the game's debut, but was eventually added in Version 3.0. It can be learned by Dancers, who learn the first spell at level 14 and can cast it for 3 MP. In Version 5.0, it is one of the initial spells of the Death Master vocation as well. Damage calculation is Magical Might x 0.25 + 7 with a cap of 86~90 once the caster's Magical Might reaches 326 and an in-game spread of 6 meters.
- During the game's "Decisive Battle at the Dragonlord's Castle" limited Dragon Quest I event, the player is able to cast Sizz as the Hero, as well. It deals 5~12 damage much like in the original game.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]
Veronica joins the party having already mastered Sizz, and the Hero will learn it at level 8. It costs 3 MP to cast and will deal 12~20 base damage with a cap of 28~36 once their Magical Might reaches 132.
Dragon Quest Monsters[edit]
Called Firebal in this game, this spell can be learned by a variety of monsters. It requires the monster to reach level 3 with 11 MP and 23 Intelligence. It grows into Firebane when the monster reaches level 10 with 34 MP, and 52 Intelligence. It is naturally learned by the 1EyeClown, AgDevil, DracoLord, EvilBeast, Eyeder, FloraMan, Goategon, Gremlin, JewelBag, KingLeo, LizardFly, MadCondor, Pteranod, and Slime.
Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit]
Firebal now requires 42 Intelligence to learn and 94 Intelligence to upgrade. It is naturally learned by the Anemon, Belzebub, Darck, FoxFire, Gamanian, Hargon and RayGigas.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit]

Sizz can be learned by Maya Mahabala for 4 skill points and costs 5 MP to cast. It is the main spell that she can cast in battle. When used, she creates a column of fire that launches in front of her. Maya can upgrade the spell and also cast Sizzle and Kasizz by charging up Sizz. It can also be cast by enemy Magi and Shamans.
- Maya is able to cast the spell in midair, like all of her other abilities, by learning Soaring Sizzler, which costs 5 skill points.
Dragon Quest Walk[edit]
Sizz can be learned by Mages at level 10 and costs 8 MP to cast, dealing a small amount of damage to all enemies.
Dragon Quest Tact[edit]
Sizz is known naturally by Clawcerer, Ghoul, Goodybag, Lunatick, Tortured soul, Woebergine, Whackolyte, and Wickerman at level 1, and can be learned by Arrghgoyle, Dracky, Drackolyte, Hell niño, Meowgician, and Peeper at level 16. It costs 6 MP to cast, has a range of three squares in front of the caster, and inflicts minor Sizz-type spell damage to all enemies in a range of three squares horizontally.
