A student of Maya and Meena Mahabala's father, the alchemist Mahabala, Balzack killed his teacher for the Secret of Evolution he had discovered, being an underling of Psaro the Manslayer.

These traits are shown by his ruthless betrayal and murder of Mahabala. It becomes evident throughout the game that Balzack is loyal to no one but himself. After supposedly achieving the pinnacle of the Secret of Evolution, Balzack indicates that he plans on usurping Psaro, just as he did to his previous master. Even his fellow demons dislike him. Marquis de Léon took the chance to separate himself from Balzack when the opportunity presented itself. Balzack's minions expressed no sadness upon his death. Even Psaro, who normally does not display cruelness towards his allies and underlings, does so for Balzack. He impresses punishment of death upon him for failures (according to Marquis de Léon's dialogue after his initial defeat), something he normally does not do, and uses him as a test subject for an experiment expected to fail.
While he appears to be a pallet-swap of the night clubbers and Pruslas in his "Baalzack" form, select games in the Monsters S series show that he is larger than the former while smaller than the latter, taking up two spaces.

However due to the intervention of the Marquis de Léon, the sisters are defeated, thrown in jail, and ultimately forced to flee to Endor.
Balzack uses powerful magical and breath attacks, and if he is injured he will recover himself fully with Fullheal. Fortunately he is vulnerable to the effects of the Sphere of Silence. He also has a passive healing he gets per round, though not as much as he has later in DQ4 Chapter 5.

In | In DQ4 Chapter 5, the Secret of Evolution has transformed him into a more powerful being: Baalzack. He has been evicted from Palais de Léon, likely due to his failure back in DQ4 Chapter 4, and now occupies the empty Castle Zamoksva. He has become astoundingly arrogant, and is disliked even by his subordinate minions. His intention, he says, is to enhance his body to be even more godlike than Psaro the Manslayer, but he lacks the Armlet of Transmutation which allows him to use the full power of the Secret of Evolution. With the help of the Hero 4, Maya and Meena are able to finally defeat him.

==Trivia== | |||
*The name "Baalzack" is derived from Baal, the Levant honorific title equivalent to the English "lord". The title has been misappropriated into "Bael" and "Beelzebub" over the centuries, two of the most infamous demons in the Lesser Key of Solomon. This works as a double pun, befitting Balzack's arrogance upon obtaining his transformed state and his demonic actions through out the game's story.
*Balzack is briefly mentioned by Dr. Helix Helix in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, as having been the one who gave him the Secret of Evolution after stealing it from Mahabala.

Balzack | |
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
Japanese name | バルザック |
Romaji | Baruzakku |
Title | Marquis Régent
Marquis |
Race | Human (originally)
Monster (currently) |
Age | Unknown |
Balzack is a character in Dragon Quest IV.
A student of Maya and Meena Mahabala's father, the alchemist Mahabala, Balzack killed his teacher for the Secret of Evolution he had discovered, being an underling of Psaro the Manslayer.
Characteristics[edit]
Balzack possesses several qualities of a typical villain: arrogant, dishonest, immoral, and murderous.
While he appears to be a pallet-swap of the night clubbers and Pruslas in his "Baalzack" form, select games in the Monsters series show that he is larger than the former while smaller than the latter, taking up two spaces.
Selected quotes[edit]
- If Meena and/or Maya are in the party:
- "'Uman imbéciles! Zis is my castle now. ...Oh? I 'ave a sense of déjà vu. Ze daughter of Mahabala, non? What a plaisir to see you again! You do not recognise me, per'aps? It is I, Balzack. But I am stronger zan before. Now zey call me Baalzack! Regard ze result of my évolution extraordinaire! Zis is ze closest you will ever come to seeing ze form of a god! Zere is only one— Non! In zis form I am stronger even zan Psaro ze Manslayer 'imself! Listen well, ma fille. I know 'ow you must miss your father... But soon you will join 'im!"
- "Uman imbéciles! What business do you 'ave in zis castle? ...Ah, it is you... Ze original in'abitants, non? Ah ha ha! Welcom 'ome! But zis is my castle now. Ze castle of Baalzack! If you desire to 'ave your castle back, you will 'ave to defeat me! Regard ze result of my évolution extraordinaire! Zis is ze closest you will ever come to seeing ze form of a god! Zere is only one— Non! In zis form I am stronger even zan Psaro ze Manslayer 'imself! Bien! You will grovel in ze presence of such might!"
- "Uman imbéciles! What business do you 'ave in zis castle? But zis is my castle now. Ze castle of Baalzack! Regard ze result of my évolution extraordinaire! Zis is ze closest you will ever come to seeing ze form of a god! I am more mighty zan 'umans. I am more mighty zan ze monsters! You will grovel in ze presence of such might! Zere is only one— Non! In zis form I am stronger even zan Psaro ze Manslayer 'imself! So attack me at your peril, pathétique worms!"
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]
The entirety of Chapter 4 is centered on the sisters' quest to track down their father's murderer, whom they finally encounter at Palais de Léon.
He also has a passive healing he gets per round, though not as much as he has later in Chapter 5.
In Chapter 5, the Secret of Evolution has transformed him into a more powerful being: Baalzack. He has been evicted from Palais de Léon, likely due to his failure back in Chapter 4, and now occupies the empty Castle Zamoksva.

Trivia[edit]
- The name "Baalzack" is derived from Baal, the Levant honorific title equivalent to the English "lord". The title has been misappropriated into "Bael" and "Beelzebub" over the centuries, two of the most infamous demons in the Lesser Key of Solomon. This works as a double pun, befitting Balzack's arrogance upon obtaining his transformed state and his demonic actions through out the game's story.
- Balzack is briefly mentioned by Dr. Helix Helix in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, as having been the one who gave him the Secret of Evolution after stealing it from Mahabala.
