Lightning Storm is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series.

It hits all enemies with lightning summoned from the depths of Nadiria, dealing 210~290 damage and costing 25 MP in most appearances. Unlike most elemental skills, the enemy's resistance influences the accuracy rather than damage prior to IX.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

In the remakes, Lightning Storm is one of the special abilities that the 9th Chosen One can learn when he reaches level 53. It inflicts around 210~290 damage on all enemies for 25 MP.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]

Starkers is capable of learning a variation of this skill by the name of Starker's Storm (プチスパーク). He is the only character capable of using this technique, and it is the only appearance of the skill in the game. The skill is slightly weaker in this installment, dealing 200~250 damage.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

Lightning Storm can only be learned by advancing to rank 7 of the Hero or Liquid metal slime vocations.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

Lightning Storm can be learned by advancing to rank 7 as a Druid (5 in the 3DS version) or rank 8 as a Slaughtomaton. It can also be used by the Almighty against the party.

  • In the 3DS version, Lightning Storm is an advanced skill that can only be used as a Druid or learned permanently by mastering the Slaughtomaton vocation.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

Lightning Storm can be learned by both Eight and Angelo, but through different means. Eight obtains this after fully allocating 100 skill points into his spear skill. Angelo obtains this after fully allocating 100 skill points into his sword skill. On the enemy side, the Lord of the Dragovians is able to use Lightning Storm against the party in his Humanoid form.

This version of the skill is slightly weakened compared to previous installments, dealing 190~220 damage.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

Lightning Storm is a special Spear skill available if the character possesses the Clear Spear Theory in their inventory. It deals 190~220 base damage, and will gradually rise to a cap of 390~420 once the user's Magical Might and Magical Mending reach a sum of 500. It costs 26 MP to use.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

Jade unlocks Lightning Storm through the Spears section of her character builder for 20 skill points. It costs 24 MP to use, deals 130~190 base damage with a cap of 270~330, and will lower the paralysis resistance of those struck by 25%.

Dragon Quest Monsters[edit]

Called Hellblast in this game, it requires the monster to reach level 34 with 184 HP, 184 MP and 196 Intelligence. It is naturally learned by Baramos, DeathMore, MetalKing, Pizzaro, Sidoh and ZapBird. It can also be learned by monsters with Thordain and Lightning.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit]

Hellblast now requires 538 Intelligence to learn. It is naturally learned by the Azurile, DarkMate and LordDraco.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit]

Lightning Storm can be learned with 100 points in the Dr. Snapped skill or 45 points in Wulfspade II. It costs 32 MP and deals 110~134 base damage and increases with a monster's level to reach 337~349.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit]

Lightning Storm can be learned from all the skills it could be previously, as well as:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]

Lightning Storm costs 52 MP and deals (Level x 1.5) + 150 Lightning damage to all enemies. It is learned through the Airhead, Almighty, Baramos, Fallen Angel Corvus, Just Ruler, Lightning Rod, Malroth, Vagabond, Walking Disaster, and Wyrmhole Dragon

Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors[edit]

Lightning Storm is a Master Stroke in Dragon Quest Swords.

Dragon Quest Heroes & Dragon Quest Heroes II[edit]

"You asked for it!"

Lightning Storm appears as Terry's Coup de Grâce, performed when he is in High Tension mode. He charges up his sword with Nadirian lightning, then leaps into the air and sends a shockwave with a slash that deals heavy damage to any enemies in front of him.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit]

Lightning Storm can be learned by Malroth at level 54 and costs 138 MP to use. It deals major Zap-type spell damage to all enemies in a rhombus-shaped area of effect around him and is very rarely inflicts paralysis, as well. Upgrading the skill increases its damage and reduces the MP it costs to cast.
