—Yelling in surprise after King Trode appears behind him
Yangus (ヤンガス, Yangasu) is a main character in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King who accompanies the Hero on his quest. A former bandit, Yangus decided to change his ways after his life was saved by the Hero and he swore his undying loyalty to him. He refers to the Hero as "Guv" (short for "Governor") and considers him a true friend.
Yangus is a slow, but powerful brawler versed in physical combat who augments his abilities with thievery and other useful skills. He wields Clubs, Axes, and scythes in battle and is no stranger to unarmed combat.
Yangus also appeared in Dragon Quest: Shōnen Yangus to Fushigi no Dungeon, Itadaki Street Special, Fortune Street and is one of thirteen playable characters in Dragon Quest Heroes. His English voice is provided by English comedian and actor, Ricky Grover, who speaks with a thick Cockney accent.
Appearance and personality
Yangus is a short and stocky man with tanned skin and gruff facial features. He is much more physically powerful than he looks, being able to lift up a chair with a grown man sitting in it above his head with ease, as seen in the bar brawl at Simpleton. Yangus has a round head with a bulbous nose and thick brows, an X-shaped scar on his left cheek, and his eyes have small pupils. He is constantly seen with stubble on his face and he has very short dark brown hair on top of his head, which can only be seen in concept art as it is always covered by his spiky yellow helmet. Another scar is located across his left bicep. Yangus wears no shirt but he wears a open fur vest, revealing his hairy chest and stomach. He also wears baggy turquoise trousers with a red sash around his waist, short brown boots, and metal wristbands. Around his waist, he also wears a leather sword belt with a cutlass hanging from his front, which he does not use.
The details of Yangus' early life are unknown outside of his failed efforts to leave his life of crime behind him, as well as his failure in retrieving the Venus' Tear jewel from the Swordsman's Labyrinth in an effort to win the affection of the lady bandit Red. Yangus is an intensely loyal man, pledging his life to the Hero after being saved by him just prior to the game's beginning. This is highlighted by the fact that Yangus has not been wronged by Dhoulmagus and has no personal motivation for pursuing the evil jester beyond wanting to assist the Hero. This continues as the stakes of the adventure become more dire and the battles fiercer, with Yangus sticking to the group through thick and thin regardless. Though he bickers very frequently with King Trode, Yangus affectionally calls the cursed royal "grandad" (Ojiisan) and puts up with his more overbearing aspects. Yangus is initially skeptical of Jessica Albert and Angelo joining the group due to the former being a seemingly helpless teenage girl and the latter due to being used as temporary decoys for blame in Maella Abbey, but as they quickly prove their worth he comes to see them as staunch allies and friends.
As seen in his personal skill set, Humanity, Yangus' development centers on discovering his humane side after years living as a criminal. This manifests in battle by developing a repertoire of abilities focused on helping his allies that rang from direct support spells such as Share Magic, to making a fool of himself to stun the enemy. Outside of battle Yangus makes an effort to be friendly when possible, such as when he attempted to console the masked thug in Simpleton after the latter lost to Angelo in cards. Unfortunately despite his best efforts, Yangus has proven unable to read a room at times, which lead to a bar brawl in the aforementioned instance.
Appearances
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
The game begins with Yangus already accompany the Hero, King Trode, and Princess Medea in a glen outside of Farebury. Later, during the sea voyage between Port Prospect and Peregrin Quay, Yangus explains the reason for his traveling with the group to Jessica in the form of a flashback: prior to the beginning for the game, Yangus attempted to leave his criminal ways and earn an honest living but was unable to make any headway due to his appearance and history. Forced back into banditry, Yangus set up shop on a bridge connecting Castle Trodain to the Farebury Region and would rob any who attempted to pass--dialogue implies that King Trode's entourage is the first group to encounter Yangus. Boldly claiming that this is "his" bridge, Yangus demands the possessions of the party under the threat of his axe. King Trode scoffs at the threat, stating the bridge lies in his kingdom and that his guard is more than a match for the would-be thief. Yangus loses his temper and attempts to strike, but he misses his mark and damages the ropes holding the bridge together.
King Trode drives his wagon to the other side of the bridge before it collapses, and insists the group leave Yangus to his fate as he struggles to hold on to one of the ropes. Despite the earlier attempted assault, the Hero saves Yangus by pulling him to safety, who thanked the Hero and in turn pledged his loyalty to him. It is during this scene that Yangus gives the Hero the nickname of Guv.
After the events of Ascantha, Yangus feels sorry for Trode being unable to participate in the celebratory feast the King threw for them and suggests the group travel to his home town of Pickham. A backwoods ghetto inhabited by all manner of unscrupulous persons, Yangus assumes that the seedy town is the perfect place for Trode to feel human again as no one would give him a second glance. This initially holds true as he's able to drink at the local bar, but disaster follows as Princess Medea is stolen and sold off to Red, and infamous bandit from Yangus' past. Stubborn, she refuses to yield over her new mare unless Yangus is able to follow up on an old promise of his and steal the coveted Venus' Tear jewel from the catacombs know as the Swordsman's Labyrinth. The tomb is filled with traps and mind-numbing puzzles, but the former thief is able to persevere and shares a bit of his history with the }{Hero 8}}--before asking him to keep it a secret between the two of them.
Back at Red's hideout, the woman refuses to relinquish Medea as she considers her to be of a higher quality than the gem. Dumbstruck, Yangus then falls to his knees and bows as he pleads with Red to return Medea for the sake of the Hero and King Trode. Shocked and flustered that the stubborn man would actually beg, Red realizes the importance of the horse to the party and gives her to them in exchange for the jewel. This act does much to repair the relationship between the two, and is strongly implied to rekindle the flames they shared. Yangus is oblivious to this at first, but later on when speaking to Red near the end of the game she will give Yangus her prized Flail of fury and demands that it be returned the moment the world has been saved. Jessica spells it out in Party Chat that Red is telling Yangus to return to her in one piece in her own aggressive way. At the end of the game, after the final boss is defeated, Jessica informs the Hero that Yangus and Red have gone into business together.

- Yangus also possesses a 25% resistance to Frizz, Sizz, and Fire Breath damage.
- In the Nintendo 3DS version of VIII, Yangus is given a significant strength boost. The extra points start at Level 21, and result in a score of 425 at level 99.
Yangus has the highest strength throughout the bulk of the adventure in the PS2 version, and through the entire journey in the 3DS port. But Yangus will also gain access to healing spells and the vital Share Magic if the player dabbles in his Humanity skillset, giving him some flexibility. This will help immensely in the beginning of the game, but as the journey progresses he will still be outclassed by the support and healing options of Angelo and the Hero. He also has access to some of the most protective armour in the game, which increases his survivability in combat. Yangus has the lowest MP growth of all the characters, limiting his skill and magic usage.
Each of Yangus' weapon paths has high damage modifiers and various bonus attributes: Scythes for stealing items or have access to instant death attacks, Axes for the most helpful skills against metal slimes and inflict bonus damage to various monster families, and Clubs to farm gold more easily as well as stun foes. Humanity will lead to Yangus' more comedic abilities, like Underpants Dance and Golden Oldies, as well as the aforementioned healing and support abilities. His Fisticuffs skillset is considered by many players to be the most useful variant as well.

Trivia
- Yangus is the first party member to have already joined the Hero prior to the game's beginning. One could count the presence of Carver and Milly during the opening of Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, but that sequence is effectively a playable cutscene and the two aforementioned characters are removed immediately afterwards.
