Psaro the Manslayer is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series that appears as the central antagonist in Dragon Quest IV. He is a powerful monster with a passionate hatred for humanity.
Characteristics[edit]
Psaro hates and is in turn reviled by humans, but revered by the monsters of Diabolic Hall and the inhabitants of Rosehill. When Rose, his lover, was attacked by humans for the ruby tears she sheds as an elf, he protected her by concealing her in a small fortress he built far away from human settlements. The town of Rosehill grew up around it as others looking for shelter from humans relocated there. Psaro paid frequent visits to Rosehill in order to see Rose. He shares with her his plans to destroy humanity, while disregarding her pleas to stop and pursue peaceful co-existence.
Near the end of the events of IV, Aamon orchestrates the murder of Rose via a group of human bandits, causing Psaro to go insane with grief. He loses what little inhibition Rose had given him and uses the Secret of Evolution to transform into an almighty engine of destruction similar to Estark, destroying his mind in the process. The only thing he remembers is his desire to genocide humanity. This leads to the final confrontation between he and the Hero in the heart of Nadiria.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]
Psaro the Manslayer is fought at the very end of Dragon Quest IV. He is notably the first transforming final boss in the Dragon Quest series, and the electronic entertainment medium as a whole. The battle is a test of endurance more than anything, as Psaro's only tricks are ones used by other bosses earlier on, so the player should already be familiar with the methods of dealing with them. He has seven different phases, slowly undergoing a gruesome metamorphosis.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]
The transformed Psaro appears in a grim vision showing the player what would happen if the prince were to fall for Aamon's plot as in IV, wherein he becomes a mindless beast that eradicates the circles of Nadiria and slaughtering the friends made along the game's journey. This vision concludes with Psaro facing the Chosen as the Zenith Dragon laments his fate.
Thankfully, the sands of time are used by the sticky-fingered Toilen Trubble to gives Psaro and Rose a second chance, who instantly see through Aamon's deceit and take the battle to the evil priest in his lair in the Circle of Caprice. The grotesque Psaro makes no further appearances in the game now that disaster is averted, but can be synthesised like the other Archfiends at any time.

Trivia[edit]
- There are two Psaro's in the remake; the other one is a gender-confused naked man who is encountered after obtaining all of the Pandemonic Equipment in the Fungeon.
- There is a grammatical error in the IX's Japanese version of the bestiary; it was written 秘密 (Himitsu) when it should have been 秘法 (Hibou, meaning secret act literary), although it is the same meaning.
