Localization inconsistency
The character currently localized as Robbin' 'Ood has had a very bizarre experience with the English language since the merger of Enix and Square in 2004. Originally, Enix of America simply romanized his name as Kandar, and this remained consistent until the release of the first Joker game. In that title, the character was dubbed Robbin Hood and this name was kept through the localization of the DS version of Dragon Quest V.

In that title, the character was dubbed Robbin Hood and this name was kept through the localization of the DS version of Dragon Quest V.

The localization of the second Joker game created a problem by interpreting カンダタおやぶん (Boss Kandar) as a separate person altogether. The intent that this was an advanced, stronger version of the same character was either ignored by Square-Enix's localization staff or simply not understood, and as such was given the name Prince o' thieves. This has lead to confusion among fans, as the only palette swap of the common Hoodlum enemies to have anything to do with banditry has been Kandar/Robbin Ood throughout the entire series.

The situation became more convoluted with the localization of the cell phone port of the third game, in which the Robbin Hood name was shortened to a more cockney-accented Robbin' 'Ood. The reason for this is currently unknown.
The situation became more convoluted with the localization of the Cell phone port of the third game, in which the Robbin Hood name was shortened to a more cockney-accented Robbin' 'Ood. The reason for this is currently unknown, but it was likely done to fit more with the character's Cockney accent.

Robbin' 'Ood's henchmen have also suffered inconsistent adaptations into English, with the Robbin huddle enemy that debuts in Dragon Quest III being split into two groups when no distinction existed in the original Japanese. An entirely new English name (Merry man) was assigned to these same goons for their return in Dragon Quest XI.

Robbin' 'Ood and his henchmen first appear in the Skyfell Tower west of Khoryv, having stolen the crown from the king of Romaria and leaving the place in chaos. This forces the king to recruit the Hero 3 on a sidequest to retrieve the crown. However, performing the sidequest is optional, and failing to retrieve the crown does not prevent the hero from continuing the game.

This forces the King to recruit the Hero 3 on a sidequest to retrieve the crown. In the original Famicom and NES version, retrieving the crown  is optional, though the encounter is referenced after defeating him later.  The fight for the crown is mandatory in the remakes as he doesn't show up in his other hideout until then.

Within the tower, Robbin' attempts to thwart the Party 3 by opening a trap door beneath the group's feet.  Upon returning to the previous floor, the Hero 3 finds the enemy has vanished.  However, after leaping off the edge where Robbin' had been standing, the Hero 3 finds him several floors below.  This results in the first genuine boss fight of the game (assuming the Hero 3 doesn't skip the side quest). After the battle, the Hero 3 acquires the king of Romaria's crown after Robbin' starts begging for his life.

The thief's second appearance is in the appropriately named Kidnapper's Cave, about northwest of Baharata. Robbin' 'Ood and his goons advance in their criminal careers by kidnapping Gopal Gupta & Tanaya, holding them for ransom. Upon freeing the young lovers, the Hero 3 is confronted by the would-be kingpin himself, who challenges him to battle. After receiving a second defeat from the Party 3, the crook pleads for mercy, claiming that he'll change his ways for real.

Robbin' hood is supposed to be obtainable by collecting all the monsters and skill in the game. However, due to an oversight, the game includes Robbin' hood itself in this check, meaning the player would have to already have it in order to receive it. This makes it unobtainable through normal gameplay.

Trivia
DQTreasures
*Robbin' 'Ood is a reference to and pun on the name of the legendary English outlaw Robin Hood. This reference is continued with an advanced version of Robbin' 'Ood in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2: known in Japanese as Boss Kandata, it is called "Prince o' Thieves" in English after a common epithet for Robin Hood. The enemies accompanying a Robbin' 'Ood are sometimes known as merry men, after Robin Hood's own merry men.
Robbin' 'Ood and his merry miscreants appear as one of the several rival gangs seeking to swipe the treasure on display in the main building of Eggshell Island. The big brute will also cameo during the ending celebration, stating he had only heard that there was a party and is totally oblivious to the treasure of treasures being discovered.

Robbin' 'Ood appears as a S-rank member of the ??? family who appears as a boss in the game's main storyline. He is first encountered in the second chapter of Part 1: Bravas. He is the leader of some bandits that have been causing trouble, and their hiding spot is inside a cave Majellan and the group need to pass through. After a fight against him, he nicely shows the party the way out. He reappears in the eighteenth chapter, after stealing gold from some monster. After a skirmish with the famous thief, Mindini scolds him, trying to get him to end his thievery.
He would later appear in the Dark sabrecub Battle Road as the boss of the 6th and 7th stages. Mindini wants an axe wielder with whom the Dark sabrecub can practice against, and Robbin' happily accepts. After losing, Mindini and the dark sabrecub mock him, angering him. Robbin' then calls out his Robbin' 'oodlums, and a tougher rematch ensues. After his second defeat, the group thanks him for the great practice.
He has a unique emblem in this game that resembles a jolly roger, with his hood in the front and a couple of axes behind it.
Robbin' 'Ood appears in the Halloween event trying to get Mindini's candy, and in Alena and Maribel's hero quests.
Another version of Robbin' 'Ood appears in the Dragon Quest III event, but this version of Robbin' doesn't know Mindini, Majellan, or the player.
This version of Robbin' 'Ood could eventually be recruited during the limited True Dragon Quest III event. He will join the party in Chapter 1, Episode 4 of the event quests and he can be fully awakened by collecting Robbin' 'Ood Crystals from clearing the East Baharata Cave in Search for a Legend on any difficulty. Robbin' 'Ood also stars in his own Battle Road.

Robbin' 'Ood is a character and recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series that was introduced in Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation. He is most infamous for his mini-boss battles in III and appears three separate times throughout the game, committing heinous criminal acts in all but one of his appearances.

Appearance and personality[edit]

Localization inconsistency[edit]

The character currently localized as Robbin' 'Ood has had a very bizarre experience with the English language since the merger of Enix and Square in 2004. Originally, Enix of America simply romanized his name as Kandar, and this remained consistent until the release of the first Joker game. In that title, the character was dubbed Robbin Hood and this name was kept through the localization of the DS version of Dragon Quest V.

The localization of the second Joker game created a problem by interpreting カンダタおやぶん (Boss Kandar) as a separate person altogether. The intent that this was an advanced, stronger version of the same character was either ignored by Square Enix's localization staff or simply not understood, and as such was given the name Prince o' thieves.

Main series appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

Robbin' 'Ood and his henchmen first appear in the Skyfell Tower west of Khoryv, having stolen the crown from the King of Romaria and leaving the place in chaos. This forces the King to recruit the Hero on a sidequest to retrieve the crown. In the original Famicom and NES version, retrieving the crown is optional, though the encounter is referenced after defeating him later. The fight for the crown is mandatory in the remakes as he doesn't show up in his other hideout until then.

Robbin' 'Ood begging the party for mercy.

Within the tower, Robbin' attempts to thwart the party by opening a trap door beneath the group's feet. Upon returning to the previous floor, the Hero finds the enemy has vanished. However, after leaping off the edge where Robbin' had been standing, the Hero finds him several floors below. This results in the first genuine boss fight of the game (assuming the Hero doesn't skip the side quest). After the battle, the Hero acquires the king of Romaria's crown after Robbin' starts begging for his life.

The thief's second appearance is in the appropriately named Kidnapper's Cave, about northwest of Baharata. Robbin' 'Ood and his goons advance in their criminal careers by kidnapping Gopal Gupta & Tanaya, holding them for ransom. Upon freeing the young lovers, the Hero is confronted by the would-be kingpin himself, who challenges him to battle. After receiving a second defeat from the party, the crook pleads for mercy, claiming that he'll change his ways for real.

Robbin' 'Ood's final appearance is in the castle-town of Tantegel. He claims to have changed his evil ways and now acts as a typical NPC, now providing the Hero with information about the location of the Sunstone.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit]

Robbin' hood is supposed to be obtainable by collecting all the monsters and skill in the game. However, due to an oversight, the game includes Robbin' hood itself in this check, meaning the player would have to already have it in order to receive it. This makes it unobtainable through normal gameplay.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit]

Robbin' 'Ood and his merry miscreants appear as one of the several rival gangs seeking to swipe the treasure on display in the main building of Eggshell Island. The big brute will also cameo during the ending celebration, stating he had only heard that there was a party and is totally oblivious to the treasure of treasures being discovered.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit]

Dragon Quest Keshi Keshi[edit]

Etymology[edit]

 • Robbin' 'Ood is a reference to and pun on the name of the legendary English outlaw Robin Hood. This reference is continued with an advanced version of Robbin' 'Ood in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2: known in Japanese as Boss Kandata (カンダタおやぶん), it is called "Prince o' Thieves" in English after a common epithet for Robin Hood. The enemies accompanying a Robbin' 'Ood are sometimes known as Merry men, after Robin Hood's own Merry men.
 • His Japanese name, Kandata (カンダタ), comes from the short story The Spider's Thread by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa.
 • Robbin' 'Ood's frequently changing name is ironically appropriate, as criminals often go through many aliases throughout their careers.
