Zoom (ルーラ, Ruura, Ruler), is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series that allows for instantaneous transportation to previously visited locales. The amount of MP it costs tends to change from game to game, but the functionally remains the same. With one exception, Zoom cannot be used indoors.
Appearances
Dragon Quest
Zoom is learned at level 13, and requires 8 MP to use. In all versions of the game, Zoom only returns the player back to Tantegel Castle.
Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line
Zoom is learned by The Prince of Cannock at level 10. In the original versions of the game, Zoom would only return the party to the location where they last saved their game. This was remedied in the smartphone versions, and now the player can choose from a list of towns and locations, provided they visited them once. It costs 8 MP to use in the original versions, 6 MP in the GBC Version, and 1 MP in the smartphone remake.
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation
Zoom is learned by the Hero at level 7, and both Mages & Sages at level 12. This is the first installment that allowed players to choose where they wanted to go with Zoom, setting the standard for future Dragon Quest games.
The Hero can learn it in battle with the use of a glitch, though to use it prevents the spell from being learned in the field.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
Zoom is learned by the Hero at level 7, Borya at level 9, and Maya at level 8, and is already known by Psaro upon joining. Note that the destination list resets after each chapter.
Additionally, an NPC Minidemon attempts to use the spell to chase Torneko Taloon from Pharos Beacon to Porthtrunnel, but bumps his head and falls becomes unconscious.

The Hero learns Zoom after helping Prof. Toilen Trubble with his research in the town of Zoomingale, and this event is required to advance the plot. None of the other party members that can learn the spell are encountered until after this. The spell is used as a plot device at certain events, such as if the Hero marries Nera or Debora, and is later used by his daughter to carry him home after rescuing him. This marks the first installment that used a spell as a plot event.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation
Zoom is learned by Ashlynn and the Hero at level 8, and by Mercury at level 5. Other characters can learn it by advancing to either rank 3 of the Mage vocation or rank 4 of the Liquid mtal slime vocation.
In the Nintendo DS Version, after unlocking access to Alltrades Abbey, the spell can be upgraded by Madame Luca Luminista to enable warping between worlds.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
Zoom is learned through the same method as in VI.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
The Hero learns this spell after investing 8 points into his "Courage" skill. It costs 1 MP to cast.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Zoom is a special ability learned exclusively by the Hero after a plot event. Unlike earlier games, it costs no MP to cast.
Dragon Quest X
Zoom can be utilized through special stones called Zoomstones. Each Zoomstone can be set to a single location at a time, either by interacting with special waypoint crystals (usually located outside points of interest, such as caves) or by speaking to a priest inside of a church, and can have their locations overwritten as many times as the player chooses. The player can receive more Zoomstones by progressing through the story, completing side-quests, and receiving them as special rewards. Once a certain point of the story is reached, a quest can be completed to obtain a Mega Zoomstone, which initially allows travel to any of the major locations to each of the five continents of Astoltia. Later, it can be upgraded to include other locations as well. There are other methods of Zoom as well, such as an NPC that will allow you to Zoom to any previously visited location up to three times a day for a nominal fee, and a special Zoom that will warp you to or nearby the location of your next story objective.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Zoom is learned through the same method as in IX. Unlike other Dragon Quest games, you can use Zoom indoors.

Zoom is one of the spells that can be used by the Hero through his Down special, Command Selection. This costs 8 MP to use, and allows the Hero to quickly fly back to the main platform of the stage, provided he isn't obstructed by a ceiling overhead. Compared to the Hero's up-special attack (Woosh, which can be further charged-up to Swoosh and Kaswoosh), Zoom provides a greatly increased vertical-recovery distance and a period of invincibility with a much lower MP cost than Kaswoosh, but has the notable downsides of not damaging opponents, the ascent being followed by a swift and uncontrollable descent with very little horizontal movement, and the inherent unreliability of the Command Selection menu's randomly-chosen options. However, if the Hero is close to the blast line, the chance of Zoom appearing in the command list is tripled.
