Proficient with both schools of magic, they are the most versatile casters in their respective games. The original sages were depicted as ascetic monks wearing tattered clothing, where as the ninth game altered the profession's design to resemble scholars of high academia.

As of the ninth game sages have more restricted spell lists than before, but compensate for this by having equally high Magical Might and Magical Mending stats that allow them to alternate between crowd control and healing with ease. The vocation has become strongly associated with the Bang and Zam family of spells in modern titles, underlining the versatility of the vocation by utilizing Light and Darkness in equal measure.

In order for a Party 3 member to become a Sage, they must be Level 20 and have the Words of Wisdom in their possession when speaking to the Abbot of Alltrades Abbey. Zap, Kazap, Omniheal, Kaclang, Holy Protection, Storeyteller and Snoop are the only spells that elude their spell list.

Sages are no longer the literal hybrid of [[Mage | Sages are no longer the literal hybrid of Mages and Priests, but nevertheless have access to incredible magical capabilities. They can reinforce the party with Kabuff and Magic Barrier, decimate foes with darkness and explosions, and keep their allies alive with Multiheal and Moreheal. However, Sages can't deal the same level of damage Mages can, nor can they heal as effectively as a Priest without carefully selected equipment. Thus, parties seeking powerful multi-target damage should stick with a Mage, and those wanting powerful healing spells should stick with a Priest. On the other hand, combining the elements of a Mage and a Priest can free up a slot in the Party 9, allowing for more versatile Party 9 combinations.

Sages were added to the game in the January 2020 update. A character must have first reached Level 50 in the Mage and Priest vocations to unlock the Sage, and the weapon choices are Boomerangs, Staves, and Whips. As a reference to their original appearance in III, a Gadabout is able to become a Sage, as well, by reaching Level 55. The Sage (賢者, Kenja) is a recurring Vocation in the Dragon Quest series. Proficient with both schools of magic, they are the most versatile casters in their respective games. The original sages were depicted as ascetic monks wearing tattered clothing, where as the ninth game altered the profession's design to resemble scholars of high academia.
Characteristics[edit]
Sages are renowned for their mastery of the magical arts, with those in older titles having the ability to cast nearly every spell and those of later titles having the largest MP pool by far.
Sages often appear as important NPCs in several titles, being characters the protagonists turn to for advice or posthumous characters that leave behind artifacts that are important to a game's plotline. Sage NPCs are also accomplished alchemists, having created the eponymous stone that appears in several games.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]
In order for a party member to become a Sage, they must be Level 20 and have the Words of Wisdom in their possession when speaking to the Abbot of Alltrades Abbey. The Gadabout is the only class that doesn't need the scroll to become a Sage; instead, all they need is to reach Level 20.
Zap, Kazap, Omniheal, Kaclang, Holy Protection, Storeyteller and Snoop are the only spells that elude their spell list.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]
The Sage vocation is accessible late in the game after completing Quest #115: Sages in the Pages. Sages have the unique skillset "Enlightenment", and can also use skill points to learn Boomerangs, Bows, Wands and Shields skills. Their Coup-de-Grace is "Spelly Breath", which recharges a portion of their MP.
Sages are no longer the literal hybrid of Mages and Priests, but nevertheless have access to incredible magical capabilities. On the other hand, combining the elements of a Mage and a Priest can free up a slot in the party, allowing for more versatile party combinations.

Revocation Award[edit]
Dragon Quest X[edit]
Sages have been present in the MMO since the game's initial version, and are unlocked for the player upon completing a quest as in IX. They serve the same role as in the ninth game, providing balanced offensive and defensive sorcery, but not reaching the heights or variety of the specialized Mage and Priest vocations.

Theatrhythm Dragon Quest[edit]
Any character is able to change their vocation at Alltrades Abbey to a Sage if they possess the Words of Wisdom. They are able to equip wands and boomerangs.
Dragon Quest Treasures[edit]
The Savants are represented via statues with base values of 120,000.
Dragon Quest Walk[edit]
Sages were added to the game in the January 2020 update. A character must have first reached Level 50 in the Mage and Priest vocations to unlock the Sage, and the weapon choices are Boomerangs, Staves, and Whips. As a reference to their original appearance in III, a Gadabout is able to become a Sage, as well, by reaching Level 55. Their special trait is that their spells will occasionally echo, casting twice in a row. However, the second spell will have its Magical Might or Magical Mending halved.

Notable Sages[edit]
- Princess of Moonbrooke's vocation is listed as Mage, but she can learn both offensive and restorative magic.
- Advanced vocation in III, the first in the series.
- High Priestess Jacqueline uses both offensive and healing magic as a temporary party member.
- Rab's abilities are modeled after the sages from IX and X, as well as a Martial Artist.
- Serenica is a master of magic and one of the original Luminary's companions.
- Matoriv is a former member of Avan's party who calls himself a Mage, but also displays the ability to use Priest spells on occasion. While admitting that he is technically a Sage, he prefers the title of "Grand Sorcerer", wanting to be known more for his powerful magic than for being particularly wise.
- Princess Leona, a companion of Dai's and one of the Disciples of Avan; while her offensive spells aren't very strong, she can use powerful Priest magic like Fullheal, Zing and later Kaglimmer.
- Popp, Dai's best friend and one of the Disciples of Avan, is an initially cowardly Mage who grows dramatically in strength as he overcomes his mental blocks, finally awakening as a Sage after confessing his love to Maam (a reference to Sages promoting from the seemingly useless Gadabout class). Like his mentor Matoriv he prefers to call himself a "Grand Sorcerer".
- The Three Sages of Papnica (Apollo, Marin and Amy), a group who serve as Princess Leona's bodyguards.
- Varon, a treacherous sage from the kingdom of Papnica. His appearance is based on the male sage from III.
Trivia[edit]
- In the 3DS remake of VII, Maribel's sage outfit is modeled after High Priestess Jacqueline.
- The ability of the useless Gadabout class to promote into Sages at lv20 has spawned a meme that a man becomes a Sage (usually localized as "wizard") if he remains a virgin until he's 30 years old.
